What are you guys using for turkey loads for children 12 and under? Are you just using a 2 3/4 field load and limiting their range?

My boy (age 9) doesn't like the 20 gauge 3" mags all that much. :p I was thinking something like a high brass field 2 3/4 load in 5's and keep him within 20 yards. Would be very interested to know what other are doing or have done with young shooters.

    Thanks!

I'll have to look when I get home Jason as to what we have been shooting. The whole 20 ga. World itself is new to me. My son was shooting just some field loads and was fine, I switched to a Turkey load and he got mad. Oooops

I knew I could count on you! How does this sound?

    20 Gauge 2 3/4 Federal Wing-Shok / Copper Plated Lead / 1350 FPS / 1 OZ #5

What are you have you seen or doing for ear muffs? The ones I have are to big / Bulky for a kid. I'd like them to be electronic noise canceling so we can still talk to each other without screaming. lol!

He wont even feel the recoil when the bird is in front of him, the excitment will over come everything. Thats what happened with me  Ive always been a real small and skinny person so the shot would rock me but when I was shooting at a animal I would never feel it.

It's funny you should say that. Friend of mine told me to train him with the lightest target loads I could find and then slip a 3" mag into the gun when turkey hunting. :o I think I will give him another year before I do that.

 it works did it with one of my past girl friends and the muzzaloader. Had her shooting the 17 all summer then she shot my 20 a few times slipped in the muzzaloader and told her it dont kick as bad as the 20. Told her after she shot a doe that it kicks more then the 20 and she said she didnt even feel it.
How much has he shot the gun though? If he hasnt shot it very much then yeah I would agree to wait another year just cause hes young still.

He has only shot about a box out of this gun. I borrowed a Remington 870 Express compact from a friend. It's still a little big for him. He is shooting a tad high ever shot which I don't know why as he never had that problem with his .410. He told me it was the gun but I proved him wrong. :)

His birthday as at the end of this month. I am going to order him the 870 Express Compact Jr. I think it will fit him a bit better and maybe change his aim point to where it should be. Dang kids are spoiled and expensive! I really don't mind buying the stuff for him as he has two young brothers that will get good use out of what ever I buy him.

Probably wont help if you aren't a hand loader but I loaded my son a 1oz load of TSS 8's for his 20ga for turkey. It would be a little over $3 for every trigger pull but that load will kill as far as a 3 1/2 12ga lead load of....anything.

Yeah, it would take me a long time to recover the cost of all the supplies shooting a handful of those a year. I did see a manufacturer selling TSS and I about fell out of my chair when I looked at the cost. I want to say it was almost $60 for a box of 5. :jaw:

Yeah since he streched out a little might be placing his head in a diffrent location same as if you anchor in a diffrent spot. Exact gun I have and honestly still to this day I like shooting that gun over my 12. I have pretty much killed everything you can legaly hunt in Michigan with that gun and I wont ever sell it. That will work out real good for since you have 2 littler ones that will follow through and use it also.

I had both of my kids shoot a clay pigeon load when they practiced and had them shoot a turkey load when hunting. They did not even notice a kick from the 12 gauge shooting at a turkey.

2 3/4 is good with a yardage limitation but I also have heard of people using 7 1/2 shot skeet loads for 25 yard shots or less.

My son just turned 13 and I have been doing that since he was 10 and my daughter is 10. This year my daughter shot a 3 inch mag and my son shot a 3 1/2 inch mag. Neither one said anything about the kick.
