No giant by no means, but he was my personal best by a long shot. Was about 6:45 this morning, he comes from my right side. Walks in about 25 yds in front me, I draw back and "believe I pass it through the boiler room". I hear a lot of noise in the water about 80 yds to my left. I wait until 9:30 to go look for my arrow and blood. Climb down, no arrow and no blood and im thinking what the ****. I just started making circles where I heard the noise and finally found a few specs of blood. Followed that for about 60yds and found my arrow. Followed blood for about another 120 yds and the blood got less and less and eventually I couldnt find any more. What do you think happened? Is he going to die? Should I go back tomorrow?

Definitely go back tomorrow, you owe that to the deer. What did the arrow look like besides the blood? Any fat, any hair? If hair what color? Did you check the water?

When I found the arrow it had a chunk of what I thought was lung on it, but as far as he ran I don't think it was lung. I am stumped because I didn't get a pass through. Thinking maybe I hit bone somewhere, but I got a chunk of something out of him. Arrow had some hair on it, but was red.. The entire arrow was covered from top to bottom. I looked all over the water for him. I couldn't find a spot that he stop to rest. Normally when trailing a deer, they will stop and lay for a bit leaving a huge puddle of blood. He never stopped that I could tell. Now he could have rested in the 70 plus puddles of water that were available, which would have made finding that blood nearly impossible.

If it is a dark thick red blood then it is probably liver which could explain the chunk. Give it till morning and look for him. Don't give up though. Liver hit deer usually bed down and die in their bed. Good luck.

What I dont understand is why did the blood get to be less and less? Or Maybe I just wasn't seeing it... stumped and kinda bummed about not recovering this one.

Looks like a dead deer to me. You may have hit the off-side shoulder and that is why no pass through. That arrow looks like a kill to me. Good luck finding him tomorrow.

Blades have been ran under water in the picture, but you can still see some chunks and hair on the blade.. And you can see on the arrow the blood.. its a dark red ...

I am with Fletch on this one. My first though after reading the post and seeing the pictures of the arrow was.... he is dead. I would be at at it in the morning looking for him, or better still tonight with a tracking dog.

Looks like a lung shot to me. As for the loss of blood, sometimes coagulated blood can plug the hole and slow the bleeding or a chunk of meat, especially if it wasn't a pass through. You only got one hole for blood to come out of. If you can't find more blood in the morning I'd resort to a grid search and I'm sure you will find him not to far. The more people you have the higher your odds. Good luck! Hope you find him!

Yes this is exacly what I thought before I saw this post. Hopefully you didn't bump him again as you pursued him earlier. Liver shots they can expire within a few hours after the hit if they bleed well enough, and if you backed out and didn't bump him he shouldn't go too far. Get a buddy try to pick up on the blood trail. If no blood then you just gotta use your instincts stay on the trails and make circles several yards from where you hit. He shouldn't be more than 200 yards away. Def should be there in the morning. If you got the cold temps like we do now in the midwest should be a done deal just hope the coyotes won't tear him up. Good luck and keep us posted!

Most liver shot deer die pretty quick...I've watched them collapse w/i minutes. It's very likely he is piled up if thats the case. I had a similar experience this season and never found it. I think I hit the shoulder and spent half a day looking w 2 buddies. The blood petered out and though and after over a half mile of tracking I lost him. He never did lie up?? I feel terrible and I have to chalk it up to a poor hit. SHOT PLACEMENT IS #1! Hope you find him!

Went out again this morning to the last spot I found blood. Made some big circles trying to find him dead. But came up with nothing. I am afraid that I pushed him without knowing it. If I would have found a good puddle of blood and knew he was bedding down, I would have stopped and let him lay. The place I was hunting has a lot of low spots and with all the rain we have had over the last couple weeks, there are huge puddles of water he could have been resting in. As I got closer to him he could have pushed on. But with the cool water it could have been the cause of the blood stopping. Thought I had done the job with the shot I took, but now I feel like crap for not being able to recover that buck.
