I hit an big 8 in 2005 I thought I shoulder shot. Deer ran 75 yds and died. Very little blood, but the arrow broke in 3 pieces. Made it appear to have little penatration. The BH was stuck in the opposite shoulder.

I really thought I lost that deer, he tore out of there really fast.

There are 3 dog trackers listed for VA, one out of Bethesda, MD.....one in Stafford, VA and one out of Newport News, VA.

Any of these close to you? Might want to call them tonight depending on how important this is to you.

Best of luck. I can provide more information if your interested.

Newport News would be the closest to him, but dang that is several hours away.

From a fellow Virginian- I wish you the best of luck dude! It's always a nerve racking feeling to think you made a bad shot on a nice buck, but you've done everything right so far.

I think you'll be surprised at how much immediately backing out is going to help you. I am conifdent you'll find him!

Sounds to me like you're going to be needing that camera in the morning; dead deer.

Rob...thanks for the suggestion. I just emailed the guy in Newport News so we'll see. I didn't think it was legal here in VA so I checked on their website and it says illegal in VA as of 2005. So I don't know? If my buddy and I don't find him...then I may take my "shed" pup out and she if she can come up with anything. Again, that will be a last resort but she may surprise me.

MNpurple: I actually only saw him run for about 30-40yards (foilage) but it did sound as if he went over the ridge. That is about 80-90 yards from the POI.

Thanks everyone else for the encouraging words. Sleeping was a little difficult last night. I woke up every hour from about 230 on. I will be daylight in about an hour and a half. Going to be leaving soon.
