Good Luck this morning. It sounds to me you hit her low and a little far back. If she trotted away thats usually a sign of a not so good hit. But I shot a he/she deer last year with a Wasp Hammer SST and he mule kicked and walked off. I hit a little too low but it only went about 50 yards before expiring. Good luck and keep us posted!

Same thouthts here on single lung...between the bright looking blood and him noticing so much spraying (or could be double lung and deer just out of eyesight when went back last night).

Hopin' for the best...sure made for an interesting thread!

    You guys are killing me!

The femoral artery splits off the descending aorta at the pelvis and runs down each leg.

The Jugular is not a even an artery its a vein (although its a large vein).

The artery you guys are talking about is the Carotid artery.

Okay guys I am back. I tracked her for 200 yards total trail length. No beds other than the one last night. The blood continued to get less and less. So I figured either she was running out of blood or the wound was healing. Turns out I believe this to be a non mortal shot. I did find some muscle tissue in one spot to confirm it is a muscle hit somewhere.

The way I finally lost the trail is she went all way back to the road I was parked on. She obviously crossed somewhere but for the life of me I could figure out where. That is all private property on the other side of the road so I went and got permission from the land owner to take a look and she if I could find anything; which I didn't. She could of walked anywhere up or down the road and crossed. I just could not figure out where she went due to lack of vegetation. I hate to say it but I lost my first deer with a bow. :(.

I feel really bad because I felt I did everything I could. I really worked hard this morning because I lost the trail a few times and had to keep circling in the swamp. This was in some thick swamp brush!

After thinking about it in bed last night, I believe if I missed anywhere it was high and maybe a little back. I don't see how I could of hit her in the neck because there was a small tree vertical right where her front leg was. I am almost sure I was behind that. Somehow I think it snuck in between the spine the lungs. That is my opinion after really thinking about it.

Two silver linings. 1. I flushed a woodcock and I love to see that. 2. I found a different awesome stand site that I didn't know about before.

It happens to the best of us and you can feel good that you did everything you could to try and find her. I lost my very first deer that I shot with a bow also. It'll keep you down for a while, but climb back in the stand and give it another go. Sorry to hear that you weren't able to find her, but I have respect for you in that you did everything you could to try and find her.

I hate to hear that about your first deer with a bow. That really sucks. The same thing happened to my brother last year. We tracked it for 2 hours that night and then he went back the next morning and looked for another couple hours and never could find her. Best of luck the next time, though!!!

    oh lord.

Listen it happens to all of us, don't let the ethics police get to you. Learn from it and move on the deer may have died or may live. Either way you cannot control anything from this point on. It's a deer they die everyday in the woods. Don't let this shot effect your next in a negative way. Meaning if you are worried about taking a bad shot you will, just like golf, if you try not to hit it in the lake one or two things happen, you hit it in the lake or you over correct. If you try and not to wound a deer, you won't kill it.

Did you try looking around all the water sources, somtimes deer like to go to water when they are injured. Sounds like you must have bumpped her on your wald back to the truck.

Bummer. I was rooting for you.

But I do want to point out that you cannot get a broadhead between the lungs and spine. You probably hit over the spinal cord and though the meat along the back. There's a lot more room up there than people think.

Sorry to hear it... and better luck next time. :(

i think he meant the Coratid artery and inner and outer Jugular
    veins
every deer i have shot in the neck has been dead within 50 yards, 2 of them walking away and just falling over, not knowing they were hit.

bummer man, iwas pullin for yah, i lost my first one ever 2 years ago, and t sucks, but it happens to everyone. just keep going, you still knocked a doe, fed some predators.
