If it buried to the fletch and you wait it out I think you'll have a deer tomorrow. That close of a shot and that angle I would think any arrow would pass completely through unless it had a lot of fleshiness ahead of it. It sounds like your brother is telling you the right thing, and everyone else is agreeing. It'll be a long night, but hopefully it all pays off tomorrow.

And I just got your name, forward backward, took me forever but it makes sense now. sheesh

Sounds like your brother has it together. I agree, back out and wait till the a.m. I have to say, I'm very impressed with everything you remembered about the shot. It happens so quick that sometimes it's hard to peice it all together. Try and take it easy tonight and don't be to hard on yourself. Mistakes happen, and I have a feeling you'll find him tomorrow if it was a fatal hit

I hit a doe tonight in the exact same spot as you, i elected to back out and not pursue the deer at all. After reviewing the footage i can see that i hit a branch which my eyes couldnt see at thirty yards. Tomorrow morning im hoping to recover the doe, i hope shes laying dead as we speek , wish me luck.

Thanks again everyone. I never even thought about guts being hit until my brother and you guys suggested it. My bro also said that if i did get guts, there's a chance the deer will bleed out into his abdominal cavity and we may not have good blood the whole time but still find the deer, even if arteries were not hit.

Funny thing is, when i saw the deer I immediately thought forward and guessed where the shot would take place. Everything should have worked out, cuz i maintained composure and did almost everything right. UHF, I'm torn up right now.

I hope you find your deer, shed !!!

    I completely agree.

I will say, get out there early. You are working on a deer that could possibly have been dead for 12 hours. You will want to work on him asap if the temps are going to stay north of 40.

Ok. I was told to wait until 10am..we don't have a lot of coyotes in this area...but we do have some bear.

I just keep playing the shot over and over. Thinking about possible vital things that could have been hit or severed. I guess I'm coating on an artery, major vein or guts.

It would be a lot easier if I had seen good blood :(

My bro said 10am....he said by that time there will not be a lot of deer in that area and we can sneak in undetected...the wind will be in our face, too!!!

I'm pretty sure his thinking is getting in quietly and making sure the deer has time to expire.....

And PIG is in the topic because he is a pig of a buck to me..

Sounds like your brother doesn't want you spooking up his deer. :p J/K But for me, I wouldn't sleep tonight, and be out there at first light.

Your doing everything right, and that's all you can do, now "try" to get some rest, you may have a lot of work ahead of you tomorrow, but I hope not.

No offense, but your brother is looking out for his own hunting, or your future hunts. This should not be the case. If you are totally just rack hunting, sure wait till ten, he's just as dead then as he is at first light. If you are trying to save the meat and put it to good use, as I think most of would agree is an important part of hunting, then get out there at first light.

waiting is the right thing...Good Luck!

for me, I would be there by first light and be walking in the woods as soon as you can see about 100 yds in case deer would still be alive or get up from bed - have your bow ready!

Haha..I don't think thats his motivation, trust me..

Sleep ? Yea, ok.....I'm pacing around my house. I already shot my bow to make sure everything was ok...I washed my hunting clothes, ate dinner, watched House...I just keep thinking about the shot and if it maybe hit an area that's not going to result in a dead deer. Tomorrow can't get here fast enough

Also, out of curiousity, as bowhunters, how often does this type of thing happen ?

Because honestly, this worries me. Im not used to this. I hunt deer with a .338 Win Mag normally, and just knock out a shoulder and anchor them where they stand. So I'm going from overkill, to living on a prayer.

If you hunt long enough, it will happen...Be it with a bow, muzzleloader, or rifle, It's all about how you handle it when it does happen.

    DofB,
I honestly think that's best. I had a shot that was questionable this year. Night time temps were only expected to be mid 40s. I shot at 7pm. I probably should have waited longer, but I wanted to make sure that I didn't waste the meat. I went back out at midnight to find my deer 35 yards away, dead as a doorknob. She had been dead for some time. If I had waited until morning, I firmly believe it wouldn't have been pretty. Two reasons, one, there were coyotes up the hill as I was gutting her. Two, 11 or 12 hours, ungutted in high 40s/mid 40s range can spoil meat.

In your case, the shot was worst, likely bleed out/gut shot. You deer IMO, is gonna take a minimum of 4 to 6 hours to die, That gets us to midnight. He lays there till 6, chances are you are good on the meat. 10 am is pushing it.

If your deer got hit in an artery and dies sooner, then 10 am is really pushing it. He's your deer and you obviously trust your brother, that's respectable. Good luck with your search in the morning.
