so it was a 20 yd shot, at a moving slowly but nice deer, i put the pin where it needed to be for the heart, and shot, as i shot i thought o no, she is moving i should of aimed a little more towards shoulder, and i was right, my arrow when right into the liver/gut zone, when i got my arrow, it smelt like poop and had little blood, i started to track, was on good blood for 50 yds, then little then at 100 yds, near some thick stuff, i lost all blood, i would guess she wouldn't be far, but after a 2 hour track, i had to pull it in. i will look in the day if the yots don't get her. does any one think that she didn't go down, any ways to better help me find her, all help would be great, nothing is worse feeling than making a bad shot, then worse not finding the wounded deer
How long did you wait til you started to track her? If you went right away did you hear if you bumped her from a bed or not? If you did hit the liver/gut area she should die within 6 hours or so(someone correct me if that's wrong). The best thing you can do is give her some time to bed down so she doesn't go running and making it a lot harder tracking job for you. Best of luck in the morning.
ahhh i made a bad shot on a nice tall 6 point no fun is it. luckily in my case the deer is fine ive seen him twice and its been about a week. still feel bad about it. good luck in the mornin Ben, with any luck you'll have some nice venison in the freezer.
i never knew it could take that long to go down, i never heard any crashing, or running, i waited about 30 min before i started to track.
Dont take this wrong, but as soon as you knew it was gut, you shoulda backed out and waited until morning ... I hope you find her
I would guess to say that you actually pulled up, or stopped following her at the exact moment you released as opposed to not "leading" her enough. She would have to be walking pretty fast at that yardage to make that much of a difference...that is hindsight, there is a very good read on tracking wounded deer on here. I believe it is the single greatest read for my hunting career. It shows you all the variables and lets you learn from a million other track jobs, really cuts down on the learning curve so to speak. best of luck and I hope you find her.
You would have heard her if you bumped her. Which means she may have gone along way depending on how far you tracked her. Believe it or not but I actually found a buddies gut shot deer this year with my nose. I went down wind of where he though she went and after awhile of walking back and forth I caught a wiff or her then proceeded in the direction of the smell and found it. If the wind is blowing give it a shot.
sorry every one that i couldn't get on last night, but yesterday after a 2 hour long blood track of a smear every 10 ft. i found her, she ran about 200-250 yds from the shot, and went right to water and deep cover, my shot destroyed her liver, and she went down. last nights dinner, tender loins now i can say, first deer of the year down, and in the bag
