First of all, I'm new to the forum (hoping to post in the right topic section)...but loving the site so far! Anyway, I'm currently in the research phase of purchasing my next bow. I'm willing to go all out with this purchase, since my interest in the hobby has greatly increased in the past 10 years. I've been looking at the obvious high-end bows like Mathews (Z7, Monster) and Hoyt (Carbon Matrix/Element, ), but I would kind of like to hear peoples thoughts on some other brands that compare. For the last 8 years I have used a Jennings Buckmaster 2000 (33" axle to axle, 27" draw, 63lbs), and it's treated me great. But let's face it...it's outdated and a slug compared the latest technology. I'm from Michigan (living in Ann Arbor, but from the Upper Peninsula), so I don't think weather conditions will be an issue. I would like to stay around 32" axle to axle... Question: Do you think bows like the Hoyt Carbon Matrix, or Mathews Z7 live up to the cost and hype, or should I invest in something cheaper like Diamond or PSE? I'm not rich, but I wouldn't mind investing the money if it's worth it. Thanks... Robbie
All of the bows mentioned are great bows that will treat you well for a long time. Before I bought my bow I shot almost everything that was available at the time, which is what I recommend you do. The most expensive bow might not be the one you like best. I upgraded from an older Jennings to a Hoyt Vectrix XL this year. It's a 2008 model, but I couldn't be happier with it. That being said, just go out and shoot everything you can. I'd generally stay away from big box stores though, a smaller archery shop will usually provide better service both in deciding on a bow and setting it up for you. Good Luck!
Welcome to the site! Ton of great info on here. I agree with this- x2 Also, you don't have to go with the flagship models like the Z7, there are many other models to look at that are great bows as well.
I definitely plan on shooting any bow before I make a purchase...there is a really great place in Northern Michigan called Jay's which is really good about giving you a try. Thanks for the input!
I miss Jay's! Bought my first 3 bows from the store in Clare. Two other companies I'd really take a close look at it are Strother and Elite. Not sure if either are at Jay's, but Strother HQ is right in Michigan, so I'm sure they're around.
