Your going to get a bunch of different answers on this, usually for the best penetration IMO it is a heaver arrows with a smaller fixed blade broad head. I cant go much more into detail about it because i shoot a mechanical  but from reading posts like these through the years that is the general consensus. Good Luck!

This doe was shot with a 482gr FMJ with a Grim Reaper Whitetail Special at 21yds out of my X7 at 67lbs & 30" dl. She was quartering towards, complete pass through. I wish I had taken a picture of the bone, it was just broken into pieces. [IMG]

I would recommend a fixed blade along with a heavy arrow. There are many fixed blades that get great penetration. Everyone has their own opinions and experiences. In my opinion you can't be a well placed arrow. Some of the companies that I would look at are NAP, Grim Reaper, G5, QAD, and Slick Trick for fixed blades. Also there a lot of videos on broadhead testing of penetration on Youtube. Check out those. :tu:

Looking for the same thing this year. I am right now targeting a single bevel head and a 455 grain arrow. Remember the bigger the blades and more of them equals more drag. If you want multiple blades try a stepped head like the Slick Trick Razor Trick. Lots of good heads out there. I am also finding that if you go with solid two blade heads unless you want to pay big $$$ you need to learn how to sharpen them. Good luck and let me know what you go with. Very interested.

I dont aim for the shoulder on purpose but have found that if things go bad thats the direction it usually goes for me.

So how much weight would that add to the front of the arrow?

Why would anyone shoot an arrow at the shoulder?

You're basically asking why anyone would ever miss. Many, myself included would like to be prepared for "what ifs" and hitting shoulder bone is the most likely what if. Being prepared for that also allows for way more confidence in aiming tighter into the shoulder area. It also accounts for wind gusts, branches and a ton of other uncontrollable circumstances.

So it's nothing to do with what one wants, we all want to hit double lung and pass through. It's about "what if". And wanting to have a killing system that does go through a shoulder bone is really smart IMO.

    1) an arrow that has the fewest points of failure possible. If anything in your arrow breaks nothing else is going to matter
    2) and arrow over 500gr and 15%FoC. I prefer more but that's the minimum
    3) extremely/surgically/razor sharp CoC head (ideally made of one piece solid steel)

    Those are my main criteria.

Well then with those criteria, are you for requiring a minimum draw weight of say 80 pounds "just in case" you make a bad shot and need that extra oommmph to blow through all that extra junk to make a clean kill?

I feel my criteria are within reason. Otherwise I wouldn't bow hunt at all I'd just head to the bush with my 35 wheelen ;)

To make a clean kill if I hit a shoulder bone? Yes I do. Do I need 80# of draw? No I don't.
