What's your thoughts on shinning deer? Do you agree with it or not? Think it makes big bucks stay better hidden in daylight?

I personally don't mind shinning. It's nice to see some big bucks and gets your hopes up for the next days hunt.

Shinning is illegal in Wisconsin. I do however, occasionally swerve to avoid animals during the last 1/2 mile to the lease.

Buffalo county banned it 20 years ago. They have had the best mature buck county results on the planet. It promotes trespassing and poaching while driving deer more skittish imo. I have spent 20 years creating visual screens with Norway spruce, berms, ew and leave 3 rows of corn up to block shiners. 2 Delta pilots back in 98' shined a 17 point on our place, tore after it over a hay field, killed it with a 9mm during bow season, went to the bar bragging about it. The warden showed up on a patron tip in 40 minutes. lost the jeep, 2 guns, 3 years license and fines. The buck is in the DNR wall of shame in Oshkosh. This bs would happen far less without shining.

I never knew what shining even meant so I looked it up. From what I understand its just using bright lights to scout at night?? Why would that be illegal? I can understand if someone puts the light then shoots ok that's wrong. Ad illegal in Canada as we have no night hunting. But just as a scouting tool, what's the big deal??? How is having 10 trail cameras any different?

    1) Your "scouting" land You can't hunt anyway?
    2) It's annoying having brite lights sweep thru your living room window ad nausea
    3) The trailcams are on private property.

Legal in Indiana - so as long as you follow the rules and don't have a weapon in your ride then I have no issues with it and I do on occasion go shining, mostly in the winter and once all the fields have been cleared, deer flock to those suckers on cold nights and something amazing about 30 or so pairs of eyes lighting up in the fields.

Do some of you believe walking in the woods with a flashlight at night should be illegal too?

I agree with Pserevengeman. It promotes poaching and trespassing . If some people are out shining and spot a once in lifetime buck some might not be able to resist . Or if they know what bucks are on who's land they would be more likely to trespass to hunt it.

I don't understand how you jump to that conclusion. Just cause someone's is shining does mean there doing on property that is not theirs. That's like saying hunting should be illegal.

    1. Always hunting property that's not theirs
    2. Scare the heck out of people in theirs living room.

Lol that is just ridiculous. More power to ya to walk around on your own land with a flashlight. Or shine your own land! ;)

I don't see a problem with it outside of hunting season. Fun to see some of the big bucks in the area.

98% of the county I am in is private property, do the math. You can shine your own place in about 3 minutes. I can assure the 15 beams a nite torching my fields are not me.
if You want to wander your own woods with a flashlight snipe hunting have at it.

Not every county is 98% private in the U.S. and what if you want to go out and see some deer! best time to find them is at night! If someone is shining houses then obviously they have zero respect anyways and a law against it wont change anything. It is like anything else that has a law, some people just don't care lol

I think it is an awesome way to go out and just see deer, But at the same time should only be during non hunting seasons

Should have read that better. It is legal before 10 pm, provided you don't have a weapon in your vehicle.

What's your question? During season You can shine from dark till 10pm (4 hours) except Buffalo county per local ordinance. Out of season You can shine all night.
