I know some of you we interested on how my redail hawk training has been coming. Here's a video from this morning. I trapped her September 1'st so it's been less than 2 weeks and so far she has been an absolute sweetheart to work with. Started working with her on the lure this morning. The way things are going we should be free flying in another week or so. Fuzzies beware!
Here she was on trapping day

Thats awesome Dave. Have you ever had any take off and not return after training them?

Actually no I haven't Jake. This will be my third year hunting with Redtails.I will let them go in the springtime after I've hunted with them all winter. I always make sure that they are wed to their lure before I even think about free flying them. Anytime they see the lure they should be out of the tree and on their way to it. If there is any hesitation of them flying to it - they need more training before I would free fly them. After they are wed to the lure and start flying off the creance line, then we start hunting rabbits and squirrels. I do know of some falconers that have lost their birds while trying to free fly them before they were fully trained on the lure.
She just started her training with it this morning and so far she is coming along faster than my previous 2 birds did. I'd say another week or two and we'll be hitting the brush.

Pretty cool stuff. How do you go about trapping them?

Do they strictly go after squirrels and rabbits? Have they ever got a cat or any other small game?

We didn't have any snow to speak of last year so that bird ended up getting about 30 mice and moles. It's nice when you have some snow, the rabbits are more visible and you usually don't see any mice. I've never had one go after a cat but my sponsor has. His also got a mallard last year.
