I've never used a trap but the last few years one of the landowners cuts his cornstalks and round bales them for cattle bedding. Every year he picks up sheds next to these round bales as the antlers get bumped around as they feed on them. I would imagine pouring corn here would do the same thing and increase your odds even more.
I'm not a huge fan of using chicken wire, but I don't see the problem in using bungee cords or a log to increase your odds of finding a shed. It's going to be harder in some areas because the sheds will be a lot smaller and you could be dealing with a large forested area compared to a field with very small patches of woods. This year I plan on setting a log in the middle of a large field with some food under it. There's a good chance the buck will drop sheds on the way to the food or at the food. Being in a large field, the chances the shed falling in the field is higher which will help with the recovery.
