Do you have any tips that you have developed over the years of shed hunting? I've been out probably 10 or 11 hours this year walking and haven't found any. I usually try to check out all the creek crossing, the fence rows, logs over runs, overhanging branches, and some of the bedding areas that I find while I'm out, but I still haven't found any sheds. Give me some advice!
I'm no expert, but the biggest help to me finding sheds, is finding places where the highest concentrations of deer spend thier time during the months of December-February. For me, that has meant winter bedding areas & food. When I first started I did the fence line, creek crossing thing, but if few deer are moving thru there, or they pass thru only a fraction of thier day, odds are that the shed falls off in that short of time are small. Look where they spend most of thier time. Granted sometimes finding that spot can be very difficult.
Alright, got out and did some shedding. Checked mostly the crops. Only had a little bit of time the last couple days and here's what we've come up with:
Nice shed! Here are a few more good articles w/lots of tips. I already posted these in another shed hunting thread, but thought you might find them helpful as well. I think the bigger one belongs to a 10 that I had a close encounter with this past year. He came in to about 50 yards with some does and browsed for a good 20 minutes but he never came in close enough for a shot. I thought he was 150" deer. I scored this shed and gave him an average spread (inside and outside) and kept the right side equal to the left and it came out to 152 6/8".
