Well, If you guys are serious about shed hunting, I suggest not living in Fargo LOL. We still have a **** ton of snow everywhere. We didn't get much snow in this last storm, but we also didn't get the rain that SW MN (Travis) got either so nothing melted much. I have filled out the first half of the shed hunt plan though, and I am really jacked about it. Going to start recruiting buddies to tag along today! If any of you live in the ND/MN/SD area and want to meet up on one of these adventures, let me know! Sheds April 5th-7th - *Weather Permitting* Badlands ND Shed Hunt. Camping or hotel in Medora. Leave Fargo Friday midday/afternoon. Scout it possible Friday night, hunt Saturday and 75% of Sunday. Back to Fargo ~ 8 pm Sunday night. Split gas and hotel (if we don’t camp) food is on your own. Griz will be on this hunt, feel free to bring your own dogs, but Griz is not fixed. April 12th-14th - SD Shed hunt at Browns Hunting Ranch (Gettysburg SD). Leave Fargo Friday early Afternoon Get to the lodge and shed hunt the hills at the lodge Friday night. Shed hunt Saturday and 75% of Sunday, get back to Fargo ~8pm Sunday night. Lodging is ~$250/person, includes 2 nights in the cabins (which are super nice), breakfast both mornings and supper each night. Drinks at night (full bar in the lodge) and lunch are on your own, split gas on the way down. May travel through Alexandria to pick up two members if they join. Have gone here twice, first time 2 of us found 32 sheds and a dead head in a day and a half with no dog, the second year we found 3 sheds and didn’t hunt the second day due to weather. I have heard the deer herded up well this winter with the snow, so I am optimistic it will be closer to the 34 year than the 3 year. Griz will be on this hunt, feel free to bring your own dogs, but Griz is not fixed. Dogs need to be crated at night in the cabins. April 19th - Shed Hunting around Fargo ND. Vacation Day, shed hunting around Fargo (within an hour drive or so) on public/private as I have permission. Back to fargo mid afternoon as I have a party bus that night. Griz will be on this hunt, feel free to bring your own dogs, but Griz is not fixed. Free hunt, food on your own, chip in for gas depending on whose truck we take. April 20th-21st (Easter) - Shed hunting Alexandria Short walks on private land in Alexandria as it allows around Family stuff for Easter. Free hunt, food on your own, chip in for gas depending on whose truck we take. April 26th - ND Shed Contest at Stiklestad Lodge in Fort Ransom (1.5 hours from fargo). Free event, register online for the food (which you pay for, $30 for lunch and supper). Event starts at 8 AM and ends at 5 PM. Never done this hunt before, but I know a few guys that have and found a few nice antlers. Headed to SD from Fort Ransom after this contest Not sure if I can use Griz for this contest, but Griz will be along for the SD hunt after for sure, feel free to bring your own dogs, but Griz is not fixed. Dogs need to be crated at night in the cabins. April 27th - SD Shed Contest at Brown's Hunting Ranch. Hunt takes places on a private 10k acre parcel that the owner saves specifically for this shed hunt. Never done this contest before, but same as above it can be make or break for sheds at the Browns Leaving from the Stiklestad Hunt the day before and driving down to SD for this hunt. I would guess it is 50% of the lodging from above, so $125? I forgot to ask when I made this reservation. Griz will be on this hunt, feel free to bring your own dogs, but Griz is not fixed. Dogs need to be crated at night in the cabins. May - TBD, Badlands, MT, CO, WY all on the table.
Moose, That sounds like it is going to be a fantastic trip! If I could tag along I definitely would but it would be a bit of a hike for me in NY, but I've done it plenty before. Hope you pick up some good ones!
Just got my new binos in the mail yesterday so I decided to take a quick drive on my lunch. Didn't even need them to find my 18th of the year. I have looked over this shed the past 2 weeks a dozen times atleast, finally stood out to me today. And I do have permission for this field, just to clarify.
Gettysburg is only a 4 hour trip for me. I won't make it work this year but it's something I may have interest in, in the future.
My plans for the coming weekend. Friday - shed hunt most of the day around home, snow cover dependent. My daycare provided may not be around Friday so if that's the case, I won't get out at all Friday. Saturday - head west to SD. Shed hunt public land on my way out to my buddies in West River SD. Sunday - on some private ground that he's got permission for. He's not the best about making plans so could be a total bust if doesn't get permission like he's supposed to. Monday - shed hunt different SD public on my way back home. My goal is to at least hit double digits but realistically i'm just hoping to get on the board as about 95% of where I will be shed hunting is new to me. Excited to get away for a couple of days, drink beer with a good buddy and watch march madness at night and sheds will be a bonus!
I was told you can't pick up dead heads but not sure if a guy cam get a salvage tag or not. Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk
Got out after work on some pretty quality ground, but with the sun out it made looking difficult. Ended up picking one small half an 8 up, and unfortunately didn't get a picture of it in the field. I took the dog to the spot I found the road shed right before dark, and within 15 minutes of ripping around an old bean field, Ruck came running back with a little 4 point side that I have overlooked many times. I am just over the moon with his abilities, even if he's a big blockhead sometimes. As they lay pictures are out the window with him!
Aounds like your training and work are paying off! Great job. Sent from my SM-N920P using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
A single old, shed yesterday after work which I left for the squirrels . Snow in the forecast for tomorrow, might as well kick me in the boys.
Saw a great looking antler off the highway today in a winter wheat field, clear as day. Unfortunately I was going 70 miles an hour and didn't have time to go and get permission to pick it up since I was working. I have a feeling I am going to have a great walk after work today, Ruck will be ticked that I am leaving him home but it is in an area that is unsafe for him.
I had my boy trained sort of for sheds and was never able to really work him because apparently every scum bag likes to toss beer bottles on public ground. Sent from my SM-N920P using Bowhunting.com Forums mobile app
I definitely could of used Ruck yesterday but I made out really well! Ended up with 5 including 1/2 of a buck I went in there for. Im up to 25 on the year.
