Do any of you make a sort of contraption, to maybe knock off a shed while the deer is eating the attractant you put out? I've seen the corn under the log, any others? If so, post up some ideas.
Idk if you run feeders but if you do wrap some chicken wire around it leaving about a foot of space from the ground and sometimes you can bucks trying for corn under the feeder to catch their antlers on the wire. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
I've seen people do all sorts of things with wire and netting. Never liked the idea of having a buck get tangled up and cause unnecessary stress on him during the winter.
Yea I agree with Ruger Redbone, especially since this is one of the hardest winters we had had in decades. You should just try and find them the traditional way, walking until you spot one or with a dog trained to find them. That is what I do, I trained my Brittney Spaniel for pheasants and at the same time sheds. It is something we do together every spring, and I can say without a doubt she loves it. In fact, it seems that she looks forward to it. It's fun do it with family and friends anyway.
If it was up to me chicken wire would be illegal. No need getting a buck that isnt ready to shed tangled up in chicken wire.
I agree. Anything with chicken wire or twine or anything else that has potential for entrapment is a really bad idea. it can and does go horribly wrong. Hard to beat good old boot leather.
I have heard of people running a series of vertical bungie cords from the roof to the trough of feeders... spaced 8-10" apart... not sure how it works but sounds like a semi-safe way of doing it...
Some interesting ideas guys. I plan on covering some ground this Spring--too much snow yet. I wouldn't want any deer to get into a tangle up. I saw that bungie thing on youtube, looks like it could work. I don't think I am going to try that hard tho.
Can't do it here in NY since we can feed/bait but people I know that are able to always tell me they just put out 5 gallon buckets with corn on the bottom of it. when they stick their heads in to get to the corn the edge of the bucket aids in knocking the antler off. They have been pretty effective doing this so far.
I have one out right now. Now sure if it'll work, but I'm giving it a shot. Had some extra bungees, rope, and corn, took about 20 minutes to set up. I may have the bungees a little too loose, but didn't want to take the chance of harming the deer. I usually walk a ton of miles searching, which I still intend to do. Just hoping this gets one or two. Going to check it Sunday.
I was going to post a pic like DBB did, thats mainly what i know of. As of right now i just toss corn underdowned tree's, but unfortunately i have had ZERO luck in a singlr shed this year.
I have heard of people making their feeders out of 55 gallon drums and lay them on there side with a slot cut in the top, corn in the bottom. When bucks try to eat in there the horns push against the walls of the barrel. The problems you need to think about are the sharp edges of the battery where you cut it, and squirrels eating all your corn... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hay bales? I have heard if you place the corn right up against the edge they will knock their horns off trying to get to the corn. Not sure how well that works as I have not tried it.
Ive heard dig a two foot hole with corn in bottom and they will knock them off and have no chance of getting tangled up Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
