With the cold winter underway, I was adding another log (or two ) to the fireplace and decided to make something from some of the sheds sitting on my mantle. But what to make? A shed lamp seemed to be a good idea as it would be something decorative but yet useful. So, I got to work sorting through the antlers to find a few that just seem to "fit" together. 10-15 minutes later I was satisfied with my choices. A 5 point shed from last season I found in Portage County, a 4 point shed two seasons old I found in Harrison State Forest and a 4 point shed 5 seasons old I found in Trumbull County. I gathered up a cordless drill, numerous different drill bits, a dremel tool, metal dowel rod, a 2-part epoxy, a lamp kit and lamp shade. Approximately two hours later this is what I was left with. I must credit my brother Jason and friend Fritz for their ideas and assistance during the build. I think it came out great, the wife either loves me a lot and lied to me about how nice it is or she may actually like it? It is 19 inches tall with a base that is 9 1/2" wide X 8 1/4" deep.
Very slick. I plan someday to build a few of these, I just can't bring myself to cut up antlers from animals I've shot quite yet. When I find enough sheds I'll likely do the same thing.
Scott, way to go brother! Looks solid and I like the way you routed the cord through the antlers. Thumbs up man....you just inspired me to find more sheds this year so I can part-take in some DIY shed lamps. P.S. What song did you have playing on the computer? Light My Fire by The Doors or something?!
Ohh and btw Scott, my wife says she likes it, so it just may be that women like shed lamps!! You could make her a scented candle antler display next time.....
No, something badass.... That's how I roll. :d (I think it was five finger death punch?) BTW Light my fire was from the Doors, not the Stones
Nicely done Scott.. you've inspired me to do something cool like that. Only.. I'm thinking floor lamp. Maybe 5-6 ft. in height. May have a few Q's for you within the next few weeks.
That's awesome Scott. I'm going to need to get off my arse and find some sheds. It'd be easier if we weren't getting 8" of snow every week!
Very nice. This type of project would be the only motivating factor for me to get out and find sheds. I could never get into it.
Nice looking lamp Scott, but in a couple of years you're gonna have to put it up high, so that youngster of yours won't be able to reach it.:d I speak from experiance.
First of all, thanks guys for the kind words.... I just thought it would be nice to do something with them other than stack them in a bin and or place them on the mantle. I can make you a knuckle sammich.... :d I saw some replica standing lamps made of elk antlers.... Looked pretty sweet. Good luck on your project
That is very nice Scott. You could router out a slot in the antler and then fill it to hide the cord but I'm very impressed. I actually have one, bought of course but I got a hell of a deal. I was at a Susquehanna Waterfowlers Banquet as a quest of Gander Mountain and one went up for bid. Well since I was sitting with the Regional Manager that bought everything I had an inside edge on everyone. I think I paid $20 for a $100 lamp. I feel however I'd cherish yours a little more seeing it's self made. Nice going.
