Jeffs thread about Montecs for both bows got me thinking and that can be dangerous for me. Like Jeff I'm looking for simplicity in my BH of choice. I would like to find a head I can use with my 55# Kanga longbow as well as with my 65# Marquis. I had narrowed my choices down to two different BHs, both of which I have. The choices are 125 gr NAP Hellrazors or 125gr Magnus Snuffers. I really like how sharp the NAP heads are out of the package, SCARY SHARP! They fly well out of both bows. Cost was $34.99 for 3. The Snuffers needed a touch up out of the package, they too fly well out of both bows. (Both bows are well tuned!) A 6-pack cost me $24.99, a real bargain. Anyway, I digress. Saturday, after a good practice session I decided to sharpen some of the Snuffers for an upcoming hog hunt. (The Hellrazors need no assistance in this dept.) Shultzy gave me some tips on getting these Snuffers nice and sharp. Rather than listen to his voice of experience I decided to try thing differently. Step one was to take a very fine file to the heads as per the package instructions. This gave me a good start. Next step was to use ceramic sharpening sticks. This was the method recommended by Shultzy and I have had good luck with it in the past. This got the heads sharp enough to shave the hair off my forearm and its where I should have quit. I went on to try and get them sharper with a BH sharpening tool. Its the one with 2 pieces of carbon steel in a v shape built into a handle that also has a BH wrench. I had the head screwed into a 8" piece of an aluminum shaft. After several strokes I slipped and hit my right index finger about 1" above the first knuckle. The BH is plenty sharp. I didn't actually see the bone and the blood didn't start flowing for several seconds. However the Dr. at the emergency room that put the 4 stitches in my finger said it did indeed cut to the bone. Hence the OUCH!!! in the thread title. I'll be hunting with Snuffers. They are sharp enough!
Ouch Greg!!! Sorry about your unfortunate luck. The V thing you described, I've used that with 2 blade stainless steel broadheads before and It worked real good In getting them ready for my crock sticks. I tried using my V for sharpening my Snuffers but It wasn't working out to well. You have a picture of your V sharpening tool? I'm guessing yours must be a different design then mine. I'm always open to finding other ways In getting my broadheads as sharp as possible. Thanks.
OUCH. It isn't going to stop you from slammin' some hogs, is it? I hope not. I now know to believe every word Schultzy says otherwise I will get hurt. Thanks for the lesson!
The Snuffers are wicked heads! Best part, if something happens to the head, send it back they'll send ya new ones rather quickly! I am very happy with these heads, can't wait to stick one in a pig this year at Ray Hammonds(Hog Heaven) in SC! I won a free hog hunt there off of Trad gang!!!!!!!!
Well at least you know you were successfull in sharpening them. Lucky didn't cut a tendon in the process. Good luck w/healing.
