Since sharks are the topic this week in the world, has anyone ever caught a shark, tried to catch a shark, been attacked or had any close up experiences with these guys? The closest I've been to shark fishing was last year when we went to OBX. My brother caught a stingray and that was it.
I worked with sharks for 3 years when I worked at Sea World out of college. One thing is for sure, there is a huge misconception about sharks. They aren't vicious killing machines like people think. Often shark attacks happen because of simple things that could have been avoided. Example: surfers, Ever look from underneath and see what a surfer looks like?... scary how much they look like a seal. Any how many sharks are surprisingly intelligent. While working at Sea World we hand fed many of our sharks. They were target fed in specific areas of each enclosure dependent upon the species. We even trained sharks to swim into cribs in order to take blood samples each year for their physicals. There is no doubt they can be very dangerous but when given the proper respect and understanding they are an amazing creature. There is definitely something magical about diving right next to 10-15 foot sharks! Awesome creatures!
I had a shark eat the back half of a Tarpon I caught in Florida last summer. It was pretty spectacular actually. They surface all the time when your bringing fish in because they can see that the fish is in distress so its an easy meal.
I once caught a 6 1/2 foot blue mako. Took 45 mins to reel him in. He made awesome sweet and sour shark!!!
I've caught smaller sharks while cod fishng. I also went out on a Bluefin tuna charter boat and we had a line in for big sharks but never hooked on.
My Dad caught one about 7 feet long one day surf fishing at the beach years back. Brought him all the way in to knee deep water.
I have a friend from childhood that is and has been a tournament shark fisherman. He's sent me some awesome pictures of sharks he's caught. As a young boy where we used to swim, skin dive and water ski had various species of sharks swimming around but nobody ever got bit. We'd see them anywhere from 4' to +- 8'. Mostly they were gray and dusky sharks. Sent from my iPad Mini using Tapatalk Bows, Broadheads and Backstraps
Gone shark fishing twice off Stellwagon bank in Massachusetts. Caught 1 blue shark the second trip. Not my cup of tea. A lot of waiting sometimes all day for a bite. The day we caught the shark I was so sea sick I could barely reel it in. It was only a 5' but we all took turns. We also saw a basking shark out there that was as big as our boat. We were in a 28' Bertram.
