I've had decent luck with clover growing in some shade, but if you plant it this fall, you're not gonna get much growth for this hunting season.

You can plant wheat pretty late and then the leaves will fall off the trees (probably really early with the drought) and you will have more sun later in the season.

Thanks Jim and one of these days we are going to have to get together and drink a beer or two, since we only hunt one county apart...

Jim's wheat idea is a good one. We've had great luck with winter wheat/rye and oats as well in shade. Clover does well with less than ideal sun, but like Jim said will take a while to get full growth.

I second clover but plant it with a cover crop like winter rye. Winter rye grows fast and keeps growing even after couple hard frosts.

I'd call around, i'm sure someone has it. Heck, i was goofing around on craigslist last week and found a farmer selling his certified seed for $12/Bushel up here. You might have to order it, but check around first.

I get mine from a local seed store and mix it with oats, winter peas. After rototiling I drag that seed in then I spread the clover on top.
