North is straight up Red dots = Scrapes, black circle is where the shooter buck was last night white blocks = setups Yellow Oval = Buck bed The buck bed I made by mistake last year when we cleared out crp to plant hay. There is a buck bedding there, I just don't know who or what he is at this point. This woodlot is extremly open, meaning from my stand I can shoot 30-50 yards easy. Where I am is the thickest part and here a natural funnel is that leads to the fields. My guess was I would catch him hanging down in the river bottom and them comming up to eat just before dark. I am going to move to the circled scarpe and hunt that baby tonight. Should I put some dominant buck lure in the scrape? Or just leave it alone. That scrape is about 60 yds from my mock scrape. I will note I have NEVER killed a buck in this wood lot.
I wouldn't put anything in the scrape.Good luck if you don't get on him the next time out I might refresh your scrape
They do not cross the river in this lot, nor do they travel it by day. There is zero cover, I hunted it one season to the NE, I never spotted a deer. They all travel the west said near the old bank. It's about 20 ft bank. The spot to the NE always looks lights out with rubs and scrapes, but I am 95% sure it's all at night. Jeff when I mean open I mean open. Here is a shot of the old bank. Here is another shot Just real open
At this point I think he's in the corn, I should have seen him last night if he was south of me, I can see from river to the bank. My guess is he's in the corn and he is coming down to the woods at night. Or I am completely wrong and he is going across the river, I honestly don't know. I don't hunt here much, but I was not seeing deer in my other spots. There is a HUGE crp field to my south east also that I did not display.
I would get to that bottom setup super early Germ. I hunt over a lot of corn and am from MI just like yourself, been seeing a ton of them coming from the corn just after sunrise. Maybe you sneak in there early enough, he messes with his scrape line after chowing in the corn all night. You smoke him right as he's coming back to take a snooze to that S bedding area. Good luck!!
It sounds like a solid plan. I agree that you shouldn't touch the scrape with anything just yet. Good luck.
make sure you get lots of human scent in that scrape and scare him into the next county..LOL JK! just how big is this ole boy Gary??? and of course good luck!
Well being I don't have a pair of bino's I cannot not say. The neighbor who does not hunt said he was huge, but I tale that with a grain of salt. He had some head gear from what I could see:D
