Dark beer is one of the best recovery drinks after a long workout. This is fact.

I don't really get the whole chocolate milk fad. The studies, like many, don't really focus on the right things. They say its better than "insert any sports drink" because those sports drinks (or water) lack carbs and protein. Why not drink water, for example, and actually eat something that is a good source of carbs and protein, without all the extra sugar and other nonsense (like high fructose corn syrup)?

I could see if you're in a situation where eating something isn't an option. Usually a result of failing to plan a post workout meal. But I hear people talk about it like its the greatest post workout choice out there today.

Personally when I'm done with a run its more water and a banana with a peanutbutter sandwhich. I have found those 2 foods help me recover the best. On Saturdays when I do my long run, I usually drink 2+ liters of water over the course of those 2+ hours. For me nothing can beat it. I feel sluggish if I try to drink gatorade, powerade, etc while I run or after.

The sugar and high fructose corn syrup in Gatorade make me feel terrible if I drink too much. Literally poor some sugar in water, add 1/10th of a vitamin, and some food coloring and you have Gatorade.

Isaiah, I can see why you use it. Also, you are using a different product than the originial Gatorade so that is cool. Electrolytes=good. :)

I usually make my chocolate milk shakes with sugar free, dark choco powder, milk, a banana, and ice.

I can't eat anything directly after a hard workout/long run. So the shakes are perfect for me.

for anything, USE WHAT WORKS FOR YOU... and you have access to

this fitness industry is always changing and looking to get money from someone who will spend it (usually me)

plenty of people who came before all of us in great shape and all they did was try to survive, work hard and provide for their families. wasnt no gatorade/poweraid, protein powders or treadmils/bowflexs =-)

    burn more than you eat!

I do agree all the sugar is unnecessary, but I also get why they add it. People are more likely to drink more of something that taste good. If that helps reduce the negative effects of dehydration at critical times, then I can see the benefit.

Yes, electrolytes are good. Your body soaks up these electrolytes quicker because your electrolytes are depleted from exercise, and they soak up the water right along with it. Regular water works just fine too, it just doesn’t get absorbed as quickly. As for sodium, it minimizes urination. This gives your body more time to absorb the liquid.

So Gatorade isn't all bad. Still, I think you only really benefit from it if you are doing hours of strenuous activity, or in cases of severe hydration (like after a long night of heavy drinking). Which is what it was designed for. Otherwise, water will do just fine.

matt, great point! gatorade is marketed to the pubilc who watch the athletes on tv drink it hence hours of strenuous activity... some prob dont "need" a chug of gatorade after a half hr on the stepper. but watch the endurance athletes and they got something mixed up special in those little squirt bottle stuck to their backs!

Yep, and it is usually something a bit better than Gatorade.

I use this on my long runs during the summer, just because I need the sugars and salt. I drink water the rest of the time.

I don't mind Gatorade, and I'll drink it on occasion. Sometimes, I want something a little tastier than water. I'm a spontaneous Gatorade user I guess. When I know I'll need/want something more than water, I like this.
