I don't need one, but I want one. The Canon D5 and D7 look appealing, but I just dropped some big jack on a Sony AX2000 and I'm not interested in doing that again. The Rebel looks interesting, because I'm new to this, and the functionality looks good for the price. Any info would be appreciated.
Look into the Canon T2i or the new T3i. They are similar in footage recording capabilities to the 7D, and buying a cheaper body will allow you to spend a little more on a better lens- which is what is truly responsible when getting good stills or video.
How about a sony alpha a-300 with two lenses, a 18 to 75 mm. And also a 300mm. Lens. Looking for $600.00 out of it.
I'm assuming you'll be wanting to do video with this camera, which most DSLR's can do these days. With that said, it seems as though Canon is the most popular choice amongst videographers shooting with an SLR. Not sure why though. I have a Nikon D3100 and have been pleased with it. However, I am looking at getting a D5100. Same sensor as the D7000 for a cheaper price.
This^ (if you're going with Canon). Glass is most important. With that being said, if you're going to be using it for video in the field, having the flip out LCD of the T3i and 60D would be advantageous on a tree arm. I personally don't like the compactness feel of the Rebel line, which is why I use a 30D, and would prefer nothing smaller than a 60D. It's always best to get your hands on a few bodies to get a feel for the layout of the buttons, where your grip falls, etc.
I now have a Canon 7D and a Canon 24-105mm f4 L Series Lens on the way from BH Photo. Special thanks to Big Shooter for taking time out of his pimpin' schedule to share some insight! Pretty stoked to get it.
Good choice! I've been strongly considering switching to Canon myself. When it comes to DSLR videos, they seem to have a much better array of options, settings, etc. Let us know how you like it!
