    Beginner question:

Do you guys use self aligning peeps?

I've been told I should put one on my bow but I seem to shoot well without it.

Wondering what experience has taught you guys. Are they needed?

    Thanks

If your peep is installed correctly and your string has stretch on a new bow or string then you dont need one i have never used one. However if it is a new bow or new string it will rotate for about 100 to 200 shots then it should stop rotating all together.

    Thanks

It's a used Mathews Monster I bought online and it looks like it's got some miles on it.

I need to twist the peep a little every 3 or 4 shots. I don't mind but just wondering if I should. I had the loop redone tonight so it may get better.

I'd rather not put one on.

It should be fine but if not take it back to the shop and have them mark where the peep is then remove the peep and reinstall it. This lets the string relax.

Well I have an old mathews FX, the peep twists on it. The string is probably well used and it's a triple (peep cuts string in 3 places).
What is causing this to twist? It's gotten to the point where I can barely even shoot the bow.

Interesting. They keep messing with the loop but not the peep. It's getting a little irritating drawing the bow back and finding out the peep is twisted and you need to take the shot.

I may just have them put a new peep on. Maybe one for better night vision.

It seems like a double string, cutting the peep in two places and it is a used bow.
Mathews says it may be an after market string and to put on their stock string back on to solve the problem.

Maybe there's a new peep and string in my future.

The string on my bow was making my peep twist and i actually shot a cojmpetition like this, But after they removed the peep and let the string string twist itself and reinstalled the peep. Now the peep twist into perfect alignment every shot.

And by letting the string relax i mean take out the peep, but leave something in the string to keep it seperated, and then just let go and let it twist. Then reinstall the peep in the same spot. Now the string is relaxed and should be perfectly rotated on every full draw. Mine actually is 90 degrees to the left when relaxed. After you reinstall the peep you have to turn your D loop to match the peep

I prefer not to have the extra stuff on my bow. I always get my peeps to settle in and line up after a bit of playing.

    Thanks for all the info.

I know the string is getting old so I may just get a new barracuda string & peep and just start fresh. It has a G5 peep now in light blue color. Is there a better color or peep for better night vision? Don't think I want a lighted peep though.

Thank again. Really appreciate you guys sharing you knowledge.

My opinion... the string is shot and you should replace it. A high quality string, one thats pre stretched before being made, should not twist much after 20 shots. For example, I just put a new set of VaporTrail strings on my bow and after 20 shots, the string doesn't rotate any longer and once I set my peep and added a twist or two to my string to line it up, it stays that way.

Usually, when a peep starts twisting erratically or not staying in one place for long, it means that either the string isn't a very good one to begin with, or it is worn out.

X2. I've put Vaportrails on the last 7 bows that I've owned and had the same result.

Thanks, I'll look into those. Yeah, I have to twist my peep after every shop now.

What do you like for peeps? I figured I'd change that out as well. Maybe a better color for night.

If you decide to go the Vaportrail route, I highly recommend getting in touch with MeanV here. He's a great guy and he'll take care of you.

As for peeps. It's really personal preference. I myself have been using a G5 Meta Peep for the last couple years and can't complain. That peep, along with Fletcher Tru Peeps seem to be the standby's for a lot of shooters. They split the string in two and are placed in the string at an angle so that at full draw, they are square to your eye, giving you a perfect circle to align with your sight rather than an oblong circle that you get with a peep thats mounted perpendicular in the string.

Whatever peep you decide on, I highly recommend getting at least a 3/16" size or larger. They'll let more light in during low light conditions we find ourselves in while hunting.

Thanks, I have a G5 peep on it now and I think I'll keep with it. I believe it's also 3/16". I found some glow in the dark markers I was going to play with and see if I can get the peep to glow at night for better evening shooting. Hunting hog right now below the lake O in FL.

    Thanks again.

Below Lake O eh? My bro and I made a two week journey through Florida a few years ago and spent 4 days fishing on Okeechobee. We stayed at the marina in Clewiston and fished an area of the lake they called Moonshine Bay. What a blast catching 10+lb bass, especially for us northerners!

We left Clewiston and headed straight south, can't remember the highway, to Homestead and spent a few days there, checking out the Everglades and Homestead area, before ending up down in the Keys.

Was a really neat trip I'll never forget.
