Have a Mathews Chill R 28" Draw set at 62# right now but will be back at 70 when my shoulder and arm heal the rest of the way. Right now I am using Carbon Express Mayhem 350 and several different types of broad heads that were given to me. Some muzzy 4 blade and a set of rage 2 blade. I will mainly be hunting for deer and Hogs. The hogs on our land normally range from 150-350 pounds if that makes a difference. Will these be fine? Heavier arrow? Broad-head weight? Fixed blade or mechanical? Does cutting diameter make a big difference? Any advise accepted. Have been given these 2 sites and still trying to decipher some of the information. Archery Calculator ? Your gonna get a hell of a lot of different answers. Try searching the forums. I am switching to a 420 plus grain arrow and fixed blade heads this year. The rest of my equipment is in my sig.
check out easton fmj. they blow through deer. ive seen an fmj blow through both shoulders of a deer. with toxic bh
Hey Ryan I would probably recommend a 100 grain fixed blade broadhead. I have shot many different types of broadheads over the years both mechanical and fixed and I always find myself going back to the fixed and that's where I will stay from now on. Mechanical broadheads have to open on impact, thus taking away energy and momentum, which can cause less penetration. Not saying you cant blow thru a deer with a mechanical cause you can and I have, but I found and heard to many times from people that when you get into dense bone ,mechanicals, especially the bigger cutting diameter ones do not penetrate near as well as the fixed blade. 100 grain broadhead is a good mid- range weight to use. Just make sure to correctly look at the arrow chart at the archery shop and get the correct spined arrow that is determined by arrow length, what weight/grain broadhead and what draw weight. A correctly spined arrow and a good papertune will make a very big difference in penetration and kinetic energy cause the arrow is flying true. I would choose Muzzy's over Rages, me personally , I have used them both and had success with them both, but Muzzy's seemed to have more penetration. I use Slick Trick 4 blade 100 grain now,its only got an 1 1/4 cutting diameter I think, it shoots the same as my field points and the blood trail and penetration is very impressive. I will be sticking with these from now on.
I would say: Easton Axis 9.5 GPI 340s 100g Field Points & Slick Tricks This is what I shoot currently and these arrows are readily available most everywhere. They are the "plain janes" but pretty accurate for the most part. Personally thinking about moving from Slick Trick Standards to one size bigger and FMJ Arrow Shafts but not there just yet. Good Luck Brother!
