First off year number one as a member of the BHOD crew was an awesome ride with some ups and downs. At the onset of the season I had a particular farm in mind and just when I thought things were going to get good I had to combat squirrel hunting and a lot of pressure from other hunters. After the first weekend of sheer disappointment I went and spoke with a land owner who had previously given me permission to turkey hunt his land. I asked for permission to bowhunt it. After an hour or so of uninterrupted genuine conversation and a cup of coffee the 90 year old farmer granted me permission to hunt his land. Something to remember is that not all "land owners" want something in exchange to hunt their land. On most of my properties I hunt I've learned a handshake and friendship go a long way. Some land owners do want something in exchange, be it labor or money by all means then do it…but understand that is not always the case. I went out the following Friday Sept 21 and "light in-season" scouted, meaning I didn't go trounce through the woods. I went in light and quiet walking only the perimeter of the property as to locate well traveled corridors to and from food sources. To my surprise I found the perfect inside corner which still held a handful of soybeans with green leaves. The corner held some great trails, huge tracks, and some fresh rubs. I knew that the next day Saturday Sept 22 was forecasted to be getting cooler with a north wind….perfect for that spot I went out Sat morning and quietly hung a Lone Wolf set. I felt so good about the upcoming hunt. I actually came home that morning and told my wife/camera lady Melissa "lets get a sitter we're shooting a buck tonight". Melissa and I headed out and the rest unfolded in Season 4 episode 13, we were truly blessed. The season started out hot, but for some reason just turned stone cold after our September buck. The Nov rut as I know it was the strangest I've ever hunted. I sat roughly 70 hours the first two weeks of Nov and saw 4 deer on foot from my stands. It was discouraging, but with the Sept buck down already I was able to stomach it a bit more. Late season was really no different…I put in some hours but didn't see many deer. I want everyone to know how much I've enjoyed being part of the BHOD team and this forum. I'm going to be taking a bit of a break except when behind the .223 or Mathews for some coyote eradication. I'll be focusing on a new business venture 425inc. check it out. If you're interested in a Guardian Angel or have questions regarding the product contact me directly and I'll give 25% off to any forum members. Melissa and I have some good things in store for next year including some food plots, and a whole new farm in Western Wisconsin. We are blessed to be part of this team and I wanted to give a little season wrap up from the Stillman's. Good luck to those still hunting, be safe, and keep looking up!
