Yeah I find it hard to believe that both of my readers just went bad while in storage. I probably should update my phone.
Have you guys tried updating the i-EasyDrive app? Or possibly removing it and reinstalling it? Mine is version 4.3.1 if that helps at all. Working great on iOS 11.
You may want to use a paper clip to clean dust/lint out of the charging port too. The reader may not be completely flush with the pins inside the port.
