When your scouting, where do you set up your cameras? This will be the first year im going to do serious scouting on a public land i hunt. so i was wondering if you guys just put up your cameras in a grid and cover alot of ground, or on deer trails, or under a prospective stand tree. Im going back home from school this weekend and i was going to start my scouting as soon as possible. I was going to start off by putting up some cameras on some beaten paths and hope to stumble upon some deer while looking for some spots to use my climbing stand in the fall. Im also going to look at some spots virginiashadow told me to check out on a topo map i put up on another thread. so any other tips?
First if you are putting the camera up on Public land I would not do that. To many sticky fingers out there. I put mine in the funnel area on the main trail. I really enjoy funnel areas over any spot in the woods. That is where I have my best luck and good pics. Here is a few of my better bucks over the past few years. I also have this guys sheds and three pics of him! A year later since no one shot him! A very nice shocker picture!
well i can only hunt on public land. And i got the camera for christmas and its not gonna do any good in its packaging at my house so might as well take the chance and put it up. Where i hunt there isnt to mnay hardcore scouters i dont think anyway. whenever i drive by there are never any cars so ill take my chances. Thanks for the advice though
If you put it on Public land I would put a chain around it and lock it to the tree because just the strap on there all somebody has to walk by and see it and it's gone.
I'm from NY and hunt public land and I don't put mine out until turkey season is over. There are too many people running around the woods turkey hunting. Try to put it up in a tree and aim it down towards the ground. Try to get it up above your line of sight. In the summer I like to set mine up on water sources or deer trails leading to the fields they are feeding in at night. Good luck!
I hunt long island which is strictly bowhunting for whitetail. so i dont have to worry about anyone around the woods right now really except the occasional hiker that stays on marked trails.
That will help with the bowhunting only. Try to find your best spot where you think no one will find your camera. I hunt on 52 acres of private land and have had two stands stolen that where locked on tree. If they want it bad enough they will get it. I would still lock it on. I am going to check mine today and change batteries in it. Here is some other tips, if your camera takes normal batteries use the batteries that you can recharge and are for cameras. They last a lot longer than normal batteries.
ya i got the cheepest one so im not worried. I would never buy those expensive ones just for the fact i dont want to worry about it getting stolen. yea ill do that with the batteries. thanks for the tip
