I've seen you guys have a team contest on this forum for deer hunting. I hope to try and participate next season.

I log every one of my hunts and my clients' hunts and use the logs to compare previous years, pattern deer, monitor the herds, etc and I personally use a scoring system that really doesn't have any reasoning behind it other than fun. Just wondering if anyone else does the same.

Here is my personal (not my clients') scoring rules and final points for the 2012 season. (I live in GA and hunt with QDMA practices on my properties...8 pts or better and 3.5 and older for bucks and does are fair game).

For the 2012 season I had a goal of 5 deer and reached that goal on my last hunt. I hunt with my longbow 90% of the time but take the rifle out some too. Longbow range is 40 yards and rifle range is 150 for scoring purposes.

    See nothing - deer +1
See deer at distance - hunter +0.5 (0.5 points per hunt not deer)
See deer in range but don't take shot - hunter +1 (1 point per hunt not deer)
See deer in range shoot and miss - deer +1 (1 point per hunt not deer)
    Shoot doe - hunter +3
Shoot buck - hunter +5 plus total scorable points on rack (button bucks have zero rack points)
Shoot deer and no recovery - deer +5
Bonus points for predator killed - hunter +0.5 (per predator not hunt)

    Marc - 41
    Deer - 11

Neat idea, I think you need to give the deer +1 for winding you and +1 for spotting you. I've never done anything like this and never heard of it until this, but an interesting idea!

I like this idea. This scoring system has changed for me every year trying to "level the playing field" for lack of a better term.

I'll put it down and see how the scoring would turn around...but I really like it.
