I know this isn't about bow hunting but I needed to have a opinion lol. I just recently bought a savage 220f and Nikon slug scope looking for good scope mount and rings. And should I just eye ball it and put the scope on myself or take it to someone to get it bore sighted? Thanks
I have a Remington 1100 20 ga with a rifled barrel that used to by my primary deer slayer. Right now I have a scope mount that fits over the reciever then the rings mount to that...I hate it. Any time I give it a good cleaning and remove the barrel I have to re-sight it in. I am looking to get a cantilever scope mount that mounts to the barrel. If I were you I'd go that route. As far as rings go, don't go too cheap...having scope rings that won't stay tight is one of the most frustrating problems. Warne makes pretty good rings and they're made in the USA.
I can't tell you which rings to buy but I will tell you to get good ones. You laid out some cash for the 220 and the nikon so don't short change your rings. As for bore sighting I'm not sure I'd waste the time. I've had a few done over the years and if they use a GOOD boresight it works but if they use a cheapo then your as well off just slapping the scope on and starting from scratch. With the high cost of sabots I use a vise and the 2 shot method for initial sight in. PS. make sure you use locktite on the rings. yeah Warne maxima is a good ring.
My 220 has a set of weaver bases but you need to get the right ones, can't remember off hand what the number is but the front base needs to be very long. Good job on the purchase that gun will drive tacks way out there. It is a bit picky about slugs though. So far I've found the rem. Accutips and the winchester supreme elites work the best in mine.
On my Savage 220f, I used a EGW one piece picatinny rail with Burris medium height steel rings and a Nikon Monarch scope. I like the EGW since it gives you a wide range of mounting positions for your rings. I was shooting mine this afternoon at 100 yards and they are real tack drivers. Mine prefers the Remington Accutips as well. I would just mount your scope yourself and not worry about bore sighting. I've never had any problems and mine was dialed in with one box of shells.
