You should read some of the parent's comments on our district Facebook page. Even after learning of the furnace issues, they were still saying it was too cold to send kids to school. Really? 5 degrees and no wind? Suck it up. Sent from Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Here's a pic of the snow that shut down East Tennessee for several days. Our driveway was treacherous as you can see.
I don't think school was every canceled due to low temps when I was a kid? On the very rare occasions it was closed it was due to very high amounts of snow. I work in an operations center for a large bank and it pretty much takes a natural disaster to shut the place down for a day.
I'm in union parish north louisiana. Most of the schools here are closed today. Of course i didnt find that out until i had beat the kids out of bed and made them get dressed.
School was never called for cold weather when I was in school except in 94 when it was -25 without the wind. Sent from my Samsung Galaxy S4.
Agreed. I remember some darn cold mornings walking to the bus stop about a 1/4 mile away and never having a day off because of the cold. Walking backwards into the wind really worked good. Also, my work would never consider it acceptable for not coming in due to the cold and you better be stuck in the ditch to not get here in the snow either.
Why would the schools close in Union Parish? You guys aren't getting anything, just like us in Shreveport
My kids school in NW PA is closed. I think it is -10 or something. Here in VA the schools opened. It is about 5 degrees. I remember one year I was teaching and we missed a great deal of school due to snow. We had to add another 20 minutes to the end of the school day to make up for missed time. Those last 20 minutes of school with severe special education kids was tough.
I remember my school and schools around mine closing a few times due to cold. The other thing is, they were forecasting record cold temps. Of course school hasn't closed in temps this low before.... we haven't seen it before. Also, keep in mind they changed the wind chill system. Per 2001 these would have been -55 wind chills, now they're -36. Schools were definitely closed in my area at -45-50 wind chills. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
Only thing I liked about my family moving from NY to WV when I was a kid was that 1" of snow would close schools.

I was thinking this exact same thing... Was it really never this cold or are they becoming extremely strict with the rules? I know our district is generally hard nosed as it is a small rural community, but this year has been different. Feels like school has been closed more this year than all four years I was in High School.
You can see here what 1 to 2 inches of snow does to school transportation in Dixie. This happened several times in Knoxville today.
