Do any of you guys have a good website for physics help? I've Googled some and found a few, but looking for recommendations from first hand use. I am pretty sure my professor is in his first semester teaching and I am struggling with this class because his lectures are not clear. This is essentially an Introduction to College Physics class. Thanks for any help.
After the first test it seems like I'm having trouble knowing where to start on the problems. As an example one of the questions was about crossing a river in a canoe and what angle you'd have to go to end up directly across from where you started. We were given minimal details. I had no clue where to begin. I think it's because I do not feel familiar with the material. (Sorry I can't give the exact question, he has not returned them yet.) I am also taking Calculus and I am having no problem at all and I feel like the professor really explains the material well. So I'm not sure if it's just physics or if it's the professor not explaining it well. Muzzy I have not looked at that site yet, but will give it a look.
hmmm, wish I had better advice, but just say for example the problem above. 1st determine your knowns & unknowns. You need the velocity of the current, width of the river & velocity you paddle. Assuming constant velocities you take the equation for projectile motion. I don't have it off the top of my head, but you will have the X & Y components with the velocities, and the overall distance. From all that you should be able to back calculate the angle needed. Physics can be tricky in trying to figure out what is asked for, then use the math to go from what is known, & solve for what isn't. I had lots of math majors in my physics classes that struggled. We had a pretty good study group, I got the "plan" across to them, they helped me keep all the complex math straight.
Sounds like its the instructor to me bud, if you are rocking it in Calc you should be doing alright in physics, but everything that rybo said was pretty solid. See if maybe asking him to be more specific with the information for your problems will help, never know, he may add more info if you ask. Good luck bud!
I would ask one of the girls in the class for help. Preferably an attractive one. Worked for me in college... And you may get an anatomy lesson
Wait, is there a deer in the canoe with you? How fast are you paddling or do you have a trolling motor? Using a J-stroke? I was a lot smarter in 12th grade.....
Physics is largely conceptual. I had to take Biophysics 1 and 2 in undergrad, and I found drawing a diagram usually helped me the most. Draw the river, the two vectors you know (River current and paddling speed) along with the river width. essentially making a right angle triangle. Use trig to figure the angle from there. Most of my tests ended up looking like a 3rd grade doodling artwork but I got through much easier by drawing it out for my brain to see it easier.
You are from Georgia. Let's put it in terms you can understand. First off, the coon dog can swim at 4 MPH. The river he has to cross is 100 yards(make that 300 feet) and is flowing at 5feet per minute. It's close to dinner time. Do you want that chicken fried or baked.
To all the serious advice, thanks guys. I'll be looking over the sites. I think this may help. I tried to figure the stuff out in my head before writing down the equations and doing the math. I need to get into the practice of drawing the free body diagrams.
Hateful??? HATEFUL???? I was trying to help. Let's put it another way. If you're driving down the highway at 10 mph and you want to spit out your Skoal.... What angle would you put on it to keep it off your truck. LOL God I'm good.
Physics was never my subject, so I won't even try to help there. What I will suggest is to see about going to a tutor. I know that most schools offer free tutors from real your general education classes like Physics. I'd definitely look into that route. Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Yes I've been to Georgia. I was at Benning twice, married a deep South Georgia sweetheart and lived there 8 years after I got out of the Army. I was accepted by all the good ole boys and they called me their token Yankee. LOL I still have tons of relatives there on my wifes side. They're like brothers and sisters. AND Georgia bowhunter... it's not prejudice.... it's funnin'. Give me a break. Don't you ever relax and laugh at yourself once in a while. It won't hurt... really. I love the South and everyone I know there seems to be glad they met me. You're just adding too much between the lines. I have a cemetary plot in Americus, Georgia and my name is already on the headstone. Hell, I was even the Commander of American Legion Post Number 2 there. I'll be laid to rest next to my lovely Georgia girl. We had 35 Years of life together... and I'll spend eternity next to her. My family is all here... but my wife is in Georgia. We were going to be buried in Arlington...I'm qualified. In her final weeks my wife said, I'd like to go home. I said... me too. So that's where I'm headed. Have a nice day.
