My stand is at about 16-17' up on a red oak on the very edge of the woods, facing the corner of a corn field. Last night at about 6:45 I had a doe and fawn pop out of the woods, broad side at 30yds. I was sitting at the time, bow on my lap. She never snapped a twig or shook a single leaf, or i would have already been standing. I waited about a minute, let her get "comfortable", then started to stand up slowly. She picked up her head, then looked toward me slowly. I froze, half standing position. After about 10 seconds, she looked back down and i finished standing up. As soon as i stood, she turned away from me, and started a brisk walk out to about 45-50yds, and turned broadside, head facing the woods with a branch covering her face and shoulder, leaving the vitals barely in the open. I had a pin on her, but wasn't comfortable letting it fly at that distance with her being alert. She hopped in the woods, and a minute later the fawn followed. About a minute later, I heard her let out about a dozen snorts. At this point I was certain that I got scented. Do you think that's what happened? And if so, should I avoid that stand for awhile and try it later? It is the only fixed stand that I currently have, I just have my climber for my second stand. I can only go about 2' higher in that tree, branches limit me. Do you think I should try moving it as high as it can go? Or move it all together? I am a little bummed that happened, as I am usually standing up for the last half hour of day light. I am certain I would have meat in the freezer if I was already standing. Just glad it wasn't a monster buck that it happened to. Suggestions???
I had a doe last night 75 yards down wind blow about 10 times, she never ran off. Few seconds later I had another doe blow back at the 1st doe. 30 minutes late they both met up and where under my stand. Does seem to blow at random stuff sometimes, even other does they hear but can't see. I was sure I got scented, but as the story unfolded I think she blew at the other doe... In your case she may of been blowing back at the fawn...
Always hunt the wind and understand how thermals effect your stand location as well as being silhouetted to your back round. Past that I would say move around and enjoy some new scenery you will be surprised at how well deer pattern us. Keep them guessing
If you can see a deer's eye, they can see you move. I'm betting she saw you, not smelled you. If that is the case move the stand 5 yards if possible and you should be golden. It can actially work to your advantage.
I definately caught her attention when I was slowly standing up. Before that, she was eating some greens at the edge of the woods, looking somewhat "calm." After she looked in my direction, she seemed "alarmed." She never ran, never lifted her tail, but she looked like she had somewhere to be when she was walking away. I figured she scented me, as she snorted aftwerwards.
I'd say u put her on high alert when she seen you move, Then she might of smelled something she didnt like either way your gonna get picked off by deer sometimes whether it smell or if they see you. Higher stand, maybe your to much out in the open. And always try to hunt the wind the best you can although you can never tell which direction a deer will end up down wind.
