Well, that's the company`s recommendation on the life of the carbon in the garment. I don't think anyone expects to last forever. As anyone who has purchased SL gear knows, the quality of the garment allows for much longer use a hunting garment in the field. As for the fart comment, well that's just a ridiculous comment in my opinion. Obiviously, you haven't even tried Scentlok products. It seems you are just assuming it doesn't work, contradicting proven scientific evidence.
I've been around for a little bit. I know a lot of people out here in the real world....and I've spent a lot of time on HNI, Bowsite, AT, BH.com, The Beast, Talk Hunting just to name a few. And I've seen the trophy rooms and knowledge of both groups (scent reduction guy's..vs..hunt the wind guy's) and I let the results speak for them selves. Scent reduction is a joke.
Khnc sorry for my delay. I was busy at work this week. Sorry did I mention I build water and air purification systems for pharmaceutical and other medical manufacturing plants. Ya that's what I do. I purify air and water everyday of my life. I own this business and am very actively involved in the design and build. That's my credentials, what's yours? You sell jackets and pants and quote "facts" from studies done by the your industry. It's laughable, like I said once upon a time studies "showed" 8 out of 10 doctors said smoking was good for you. Guess who advertised that? Air fresher companies??? Probably not. Probably Marlboro or players. Carbon is never "re activated" in any industry other then hunting "garments" as you described. Carbon filtration has a finite amount of crap it can remove. Once it's reached capacity it's replaced. Same reason you change your water filter or air filter. If there was a way to re charge them as you say believe me it would be used a long time ago. Large carbon filtration systems have a "recharge" feature. Which ultimately is a backwash to clear debris. To extend its life. But the amount of content it can saturate does not change or re start. Second the use of carbon in a jacket with open zipper, collar, sleeves, waist etc hardly helps at all. Does it stop some odour??? Ya maybe, but not nearly enough to warrant it has a life of 3 years. Someone who owns one would not notice a difference in first year or 8th year if its been cleaned. I do own "scent proof" gear. I have the under armour suit with the silver and therma whatever. I bought it cause it was warm, comfortable and quite. I have seen same deer and same quality deer as I have when I didn't have it. As I said anyone in any industry who uses carbon to filter anything, laughs at the hunting industry. Yes carbon will reduce some scent. No different then a plastic garbage bag would. Yes scent that seeps through the coat will be filtered. But wait are those jackets not designed to hold body heat in? Ie the heat which carries our scent. Where does 90% of it escape??? Collar, sleeves, waist etc. and guess what no carbon there. I can't filter air in a facility by hanging a huge carbon filter from the ceiling. No it doesn't work that way, as much as you dream it does. All the air in the building would need to be forced through the carbon in order for it to work. Don't even get me started on ozonics.
Tyni the fart arguement is a perfectly good one. And no carbon doesn't have a speed at which is filters. If a fart is thrown through carbon at hurricane speeds it wouldn't change if it was at turtle speed. If the fart passes thought the carbon, it will be filtered. But when we rip a old burrito out our rears a majority of that fart will get through without any contact of carbon as there is so little in the pants for it to be effective. And the rest of the air escapes around your waits etc which is in filtered as well. I use a little unit to show customers the power of a efficient unit running carbon. I literally use cart bombs. Remember those when you were a kid? I honest to god crack one right on clients desk lol. But I keep the unit close on high so it sucks the air in the room quickly and the scent is in known to anyone in the room.
Here's the question and concerns that i have about ScentLok, Blocker, or anything else that promotes reducing scent. Ok, I'll give you that it has the ability to reduce scent. (not that I even know that for a fact because I don't) But for sake of conversation, let's say it does in fact have that ability. But does it work on deer? That's my question. Once again, here's my snippet of a study done on dogs. Every one on the planet agrees that a deer sense of smell is exponentially better than a dogs. After reading this, and believing that a deer sense of smell is better than a dogs, I have a very difficult time believing that any scent reducing product is anything else but an exercise in futility. Believe me, I'd love for someone to show me evidence that these products work, I don't want to see that they reduce scent in a lab...I want to see proof that they work on deer, elk, or any other big game. Believe me, I need all the help I can get. Here's a couple of analogies from a study about dogs. OLYMPIC SNIFFERS Dogs' sense of smell overpowers our own by orders of magnitude—it's 10,000 to 100,000 times as acute, scientists say. "Let's suppose they're just 10,000 times better," says James Walker, former director of the Sensory Research Institute at Florida State University, who, with several colleagues, came up with that jaw-dropping estimate during a rigorously designed, oft-cited study. "If you make the analogy to vision, what you and I can see at a third of a mile, a dog could see more than 3,000 miles away and still see as well." Put another way, dogs can detect some odors in parts per trillion. What does that mean in terms we might understand? Well, in her book Inside of a Dog, Alexandra Horowitz, a dog-cognition researcher at Barnard College, writes that while we might notice if our coffee has had a teaspoon of sugar added to it, a dog could detect a teaspoon of sugar in a million gallons of water, or two Olympic-sized pools worth. Another dog scientist likened their ability to catching a whiff of one rotten apple in two million barrels.
Didn't mean to start a heated debate. I really don't care if the suit still works or not. It's very warm and waterproof. I still play the wind regardless. To keep this discussion going, do you guys think the suits will hold odors making them a stink bomb in the woods?
No, I doubt it would make you smell worse if that's what you mean. Just would lose it's ability to absorb new odors.
Yes that's exactly how carbon work. It absorbs and holds. It doesn't just turn a turd into potpourri. So washing the garment is necessary. It won't re charge though like promised. Michihunter brought up good points. Here's my theory and take it for what it's worth. Dogs and deer a like have incredible noses. Super human lets say. But that doesn't mean they smell everything all the time. So when you say your scent blocker or ozonics whatever, made you invisible to a deer is retarded thinking. The reality is that deer was not weary or in danger zone. He was just walking not paying attention. Cause if you imagine a dog can sniff out a human being lost a km away under 10' of snow. So with a nose that powerful his brain would short circuit if he was smelling everything all day. But you alert a dog or deer to start sniffing. That's a different story. Now they are looking for a scent and they focus on it using this super human power they have. And then can sniff something out. And trust me your "garment" won't stop that. Wind is key because it blows your scent which always exists in the opposite direction. So it won't "alert" the deer. But don't kid yourself even with the wind if a deer turns on the danger zone he will still sniff you. It's not like deer are walking blind all day to something 20 yards in front of it cause its down wind. That's also dumb thinking. But when were down wind and the deer is in regular mode, he won't get alerted. This is why I don't hunt with estrous scents, rattling etc. IMO all your doing is asking for a deer to come in weary and see what's going on. A smart buck is gonna sniff around to see what's happening. I wish everytime I left the woods I got like a text saying how many deer actually circled downwind and turned around. I would bet it happens to a lot of us using scents and calls a lot more then we think. I like to sit on either food or trails and use zero attractant. I want the deer to walk like a normal stroll in the woods. Those deer are always much easier to kill and to be able to draw a bow on.
For the record, I do own some Scentlok and Scentblocker products. The Scentlok products I've owned are well made (Scentblocker not so much). But no, I don't think the technology works as advertised. Have you seen the video of the hound finding a guy in a Scentlok suit? I was half joking with my fart comment, but it's still a valid point. If the suit can't stop a fart, what level of odor can it stop? And even if Scentlok works, what about the odors from your breath? At the end of the day, we cannot fool a deer's nose.
So, I guess the infamous quote of "The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing people he doesn't exist" applies in this case? I guess when that major lawsuit against ALS industries was going on, it would've been helpful to have someone like yourself to testify. All those scientists that testified were incorrect it appears. All those findings were based on heresy? I would think if it as easy to prove the carbon garments were NOT effective as it was to prove they WERE effective, ALS Industries would have lost that lawsuit. But , that wasn't the case and millions will continue will continue to have false hopes in the woods just like they have been doing since the mid 90`s. I cant believe people keep being fooled like this.
