I was very apprehensive as well. I tried it while turkey hunting two years ago in an effort to see how the deer reacted to it. Granted the deer aren't as spooky in the spring as they are in the fall. I did not spook the first deer. Had a doe walk within 3 feet of me and never had a clue I was there. Fast forward to last fall... Smoked my clothes with a bee hive smoker with shaggy bark hickory chips. Not one time was I blown all season. My grandfather always said the Indians smoked their clothing to mask human odor. I just had never tried it until last year.

Just based on what I've read, it seems like people have more success with this than anything else short of maybe an ozonics... Looks like I'll be going to get a bee smoker sometime soon

It's cheap to give it a try. I guess that's part of the reason some are so reluctant, myself included, to believe it works. Seems everything these days has to cost an arm and a leg before people think it's the Holy Grail. If you have doubts do as I did the first time, just try it on some decent camo and put your carbon clothing away. Remember, good camo and good cover is necessary as they will smell something and possibly become curious until they get bored and continue on their way.

Glad to hear that Afflicted. Definitely a different way to go about things. Just remember....good camo and good cover!! They will smell the smoke and some get curious as well as some don't pay any attention.

i don't have to worry about buying a smoker, the tobacco farmers are all dry smoking their leaf in the smoke barns pretty much the entire season around here.

Do you guys smoke all of your clothes including base layers or just your outer jacket and pants?

This is my first go with it, but I think I am going to smoke everything...Base layers, jacket, pants, hat, my climber, day pack, and bow, etc. Makes more sense to do everything I feel. Especially base layers because the smoke will kill bacteria and prevent you from smelling if you sweat. Im excited to try this and see how it works out.

I have never heard of this before. Just makes you wonder.. deer are nervous/alert to new/usual smells. That is why cover scents are animal urine, wet leaves or dirt smells. I would think smoke, being most unusual in the wood; their home, would alert them. No granted, I have smoked cigarettes in the woods and shot deer shortly after or 2 occasions, had a cigarette in my mouth when I shot.. but it was because the wind was carrying the smell away from them.

Keep us informed via this thread of how your hunts are going. I just bought a brand new set of Scentblocker Alpha Pro Fleece Jacket and Pants and am very reluctant to smoke them up but I do have my old Camo's that I could try it on. I do know that I've never seen as many deer as I did when we used to camp out while hunting. Maybe sitting around the campfire all the time had something to do with it.

Ya learn something new every day huh?

I felt the same way as you but after reading more and more about it and thinking about the concept it all made sense. Plus this all stems back to the way indians use to hunt and watch/cover their scent. I'm looking forward to trying it and and seeing for myself!

Not wanting to start a new thread about this. Does it matter the type of fire you use? Tobacco barns are a common thing around here, would that be fine to use?
