Hope there is some good info on this post. I am hunting a new property this year & have a pretty substantial walk to my stand & have been considering trying a drag? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
I have used a friends doe gel? Don't know much about it, where to get it or how much it costs? However, he squeezes out a line across the toes of his boots and walks to his stand. He has taken about 7 deer in the last two seasons (all bow) in Sangamon County, IL. I was wondering if this is a better or equal option to buying a boot drag system?
I use unscented cheapo tampons.... yup they are cheap and work great, soak it up with whatever brand of scent you like and either tie or tape it to your boot. Then when you get to your stand you can hang it from a branch or over a near by scrape. Has worked very well for me, I always keep a couple in my pack. Also can be used for first aid along with some tape should you cut yourself badly while field dressing. Frankly I also carry a pad or two to use as bandages.
Do you multi-purpose your purse for a black powder satchel during muzzleloader season? haha I kid I kid. No to be honest I have and will continue to use unscented tampons as well.
They are great in theory, but how would you avoid leaving your scent in the same place you're dragging the rag? Unless you have a pole that you can use to drag it on the upwind side of where you are walking. This is a something that might fool a younger buck, but you aren't going to kill many mature bucks using a drag rag.
^^^ you beat me to that Tj lmao!! Have never thought of the tampon idea that's pretty clever! Thanks for the help guys!
because you spray your boots down w/ scent killer spray. It works in real life too, not just in theory. Of course many people don't prescribe to scent reduction practices so it wouldn't work for them. I have a normal scent pad tied to 6' of string, clip it to my pack, soak it halfway to the stand, and drag behind. Hang it from a tree when I get in the stand, and hang it in another tree when I get back to the car.
I spray my boots. Doesn't mean I'm not leaving scent on the ground. How many 4.5+ year old bucks have come in on your drag line?
This is a loaded question with the intention of gathering only one type of response. Not to be argumentative but how many 4.5+ year old bucks come in to your setup period? See, aging a deer on hoof during the rut is nearly impossible. Unless it is extremely young or very small it's hard to say whether a 3.5 yr old is a 5.5 year old on the hoof. I've had a mature buck come in on a string to a drag line. Was he 4.5yrs old? I don't know. I hit a limb instead. But the truth is, drag lines can work when done properly.
I've had luck spraying my boots but not so much with drags. Most of the time I'll find a scrape to spray scent onto my boots near and walk to my stand from there. I've used a few different scents but code blue seems to work the most consistently in my opinion.
I pulled one behind me this past weekend here in Wisconsin after hearing that the does appeared to be going into estrus. I put in on my boots at the truck and walked the 200 yards to the stand. An hour after sun up a yearling came out and followed my trail back to the truck. It can be a good tactic but they may end up going the opposite way. I used tinks 69.
Used an old brown piece of t-shirt tied to a string (I'm cheap) with tinks for years and have had several follow it. I dag it past my stand location and hang it on a bush. If possible, I'll drag it by a scrape on the way to the stand.
