I know we have been talking about firearms more then usually on here the past couple weeks, but this topic has me scratching my head. After doing some reading today I understand most of the basic laws and regulations on SBR's and SBS's but it all seems a little much. This topic came up when I was thinking about how sweet a 10-12 inch barrel would look on my tactical 10/22. And I can legally go and buy one from the store or order it online, but then cannot put it on my gun? Also how do the AR and AK pistols get past all this, especially when the AR still has a buffer tube sticking out of the back. It just seems a little odd to me some of these laws. I just wanna hear some opinions on the matter... Proceed to discuss. On a side note how many people out there do you guys think owe these weapons without the proper paperwork? Since It's not that hard to take a hacksaw to a barrel.
You kinda answered your own question there. The regs are different for the AR and AK 'pistol' varients because they are seen in the eyes of the law as just that, a pistol. Hense, they are allowed to have a short barrel, but not allowed to have a stock of any kind. I believe they are also permanently altered as so they cannot take a stock. All the other rifle variants like the Rec7 8" barrel are LOE and military only. Plenty own them, but it's not worth facing the felony charges that would come your way.
In Michigan, regardless of configuration, if the length is less than 30 inches, it's considered a pistol. Michigan requires that handguns be registered. So if you lived here, you could cut down your 10/22, but then you would have to register it as a pistol.
The lengthg of the entire gun, or the barrel? That's kind of a rediculous law either way, but a 30" barrel is massive lol.
I haven't researched all it takes and what exactly you can do and how, but recently IL actually snuck a bill through that allows people with a C & R license(Curio and Relic) to own SBR's. Also some other incentives to get a C&R but I don't think it's for me.
