That's really cool, Matt. Looks like he's going to a great home and hopefully he'll turn into a great tracking dog for you.

Congrats on the dog RJ. It's TOUGH training on the shed part.. but getting them out there is a great start. Good luck.. let us know how the progress goes.
He's a cute little fella. How could anyone with a heart leave that little dude to die? Very classic with the names too
Very honerable RJ. I dont know if I can see a dog beeing a tracker and a shed hunter but good luck with it.
Thanks again guys, he arrives tomorrow and I can't wait!! Did you know that wire hair dachshunds are probably the most desirable breed of dog used for tracking wounded deer? A lot of guys don't realize this, they think of bigger sporting dogs when thinking about deer trackers, but most guys that are serious about blood tracking north of the Mason/Dixon line are using Dachshunds. They are easier to handle, you can keep up with them, and they are closer to the scent line being a low profile dog. They also take less damage going into thick briars, etc. They use bigger dogs down south due to snakes, and a lot of the southern states don't require you to leash your dog, you want a bigger dog that can bay a wounded deer if needed. He has the right type of dog in him to be a hunter tracker, and he shows the personality characteristics now, I'm hoping as he grows and develops that he is able to pick it up. Time will tell.
An update for those following........ I got to spend several days now with him, and we really lucked out I think. He's a great dog. He was really reserved the first two days we had him, he didn't seem to realize that he was home. He was restless and wouldn't sleep for more than 15 minutes or so, and never looked "comfortable" and wouldn't let down his guard. Now he's fitting right in, plays and harasses our other pup, and loves to fall asleep in my lap. He loves outdoors too, but I can't take him on long hikes yet, his one paw is still healing from some pretty severe frostbite. We did get out this weekend though and walked about a 5 acre deer yard. No sheds yet, but I know there are some in there, we will keep looking once he's healed up and the snow melts a bit more. Now that we have spent time with him, I really am not sure what breeds are in him. Looking at him, I'd say he's maybe Dachshund/Beagle. I'm not so sure on the Redbone anymore. He follows his nose everywhere though, hopefully he can transition it all into following scent lines and finding sheds. He also points at birds and chipmunks. I read that you want to use a fairly fresh shed (within a couple of months since dropped) for them to play with and practice finding, so he's inherited this 4 point shed my father in law found in the yard several weeks ago. It goes everywhere he does, even for car rides. He loves it.........:D. We will start hiding it in the yard for him maybe next weekend to see if he can find it.
