I originally posted this in the trail cam area but would really like some more opinions. As some of ya'll know, last year I got some pictures of a nice deer in late Decmeber. I had pretty much based my season hoping to shoot this one deer, and now he might be dead. A deer was shot on a property about 1 3/4 mile from where I got the pictures that has alot of the same characteristics of the one I got on camera. I don't think its the same deer, but it could be. I would really appreciate any opinions. Thanks! My trail cam pictures: The deer that was shot:
I wouldn't think they are the same buck either. Be hard to imagine him losing all those stickers, and don't bucks with split brows like the harvested one has generally keep them throughout their life? If the two were flipped, the harvested buck grew all those stickers I could see it, but not this way. I say two bucks, two great bucks at that.
After looking at the pics some more I realized that the trail cam photo was from last year. I am going to say that those are the same deer and this year he isn't sporting as much bone as last year...
I think it is. Similar structure, split g3 on the one side still. Who knows for sure, if its not...I'd say they are definitely closely related. Nice buck.
definantly not the same deer, the hog in the first couple pictures is wider and taller and has multiple kickers on his right side.
Nope different deer I am almost sure. Hey I see you are at OSU and rangeland mjr. How is the notorious Doc Hickman doing,
After putting the pics side by side, I still dont think so. Similar sure, but the trailcam buck has a splits and kickers on the right G2 and G3 that are not on the harvested buck and the rack is a touch shorter in the tines and spread. IF it is the same buck he lost some from Dec.
I think an arguement could be made for the buck that was shot could be the one in the trail cam photo. Now our deer around here aren't of that caliber, but I have find sheds from the same bucks over mulitple years and the differences between years is sometimes striking. What they do seem to hold from year to year is if you flip the sheds over and look at how the bottom of the beam is shaped, that usually holds true from year to year, with a slight increase in size, tine length, stickers, buttons, gnarls, etc.....do change That being said, w/o having the sheds and the harvested rack, it is all speculation, the mass seems to have gone up over the year, the general shape of the rack seems to hold true (5x5) the G2-G3-G4 progression is similar (low-high-low) but that also will change from year to year, buck I shot last year varied significantly from the sheds from the previous 2 years. How many deer of this caliber are there in the area? how far was this buck shot from where you hunt? Most of our big bucks get hit by cars around here (or it seems like, 2 160+ were hit in the last week, right by the property I hunt) so at least it was taken by a hunter, and hang in there, if there is one in the area like that, there is probably at least one other of that caliber that no one has seen.
She is good, still just as outspoken and opinionated as ever. I am in her intro to Range class right now and so far it hasn't been to bad. She is also my adviser and likes me pretty well, so I think that helps.
To answer your questions, there are not too many deer in the area of this caliber. The picture was taken about 1 3/4 mile from where the deer was killed and I can hunt the property he was shot on as well. I had scouted the area he was killed in just a week prior and seen no evidence of a big buck in the area so I think he was just passing through. I keep going back and forth on if its the same deer or not, sometimes I think it is and sometimes I don't. If it is, he really went downhill since last year.
Thats good news, stay on her good side she can get pretty nasty, and the best tip I can give you is do no DO NOT fall asleep in her class, not only will she throw whatever she can grab at you, but she will remember it untill you graduate.
I'm saying no way same deer even if he's old and on the down fall I don't believe he would've lost all that I think different deer but related somewhere down the line but I'm not a pro Sent from my Droid using Tapatalk
I think there is a possibility that it's the same deer. Is that an Osage County buck? I know there are some big deer around there and judging by the mass of his bases he's on older Oklahoma deer. It's hard to say but if he's very old he could have lost some of the junk he was carrying last year. If it's not the same one like others have said he's pretty closely related. JMO
