This buck we named as Max 3 years ago with the full rack. I had seen him twice on stand and couldn't get him to come over to me. We had reports that he had got hit by a car on the nearby freeway. We hadn't seen him the last 2 seasons. My buddy Kurt was on stand and had him come in at 45 yards just a few days ago, then notice the half rack. We have cameras over in that area so he took the card out and sent me the pics. To our surprise the half rack looks kind of like the Max buck. He would have to be about 7 years old now. What do you guys think? Same buck or same gene pool?

My guess, if not same buck, he's related. Very nice looking deer there!

I'm guessing it looks like the same genes to me. Half racks got less mass. Its hard to tell from the pics but you def have some good genetics running around on that farm.

Its quite possible the same deer. On the latest Drury outdoors 100 percent wild fair chase dvd they tracked the same deer till he reached 9 years old before someone finally killed him. The most recent picture with the half rack that deer looks really old and he has the same rack, just slightly smaller looking.

The newer picture looks like a smaller rack. Hopefully he is the son of your 2009 deer, and will be bigger next year. If it is the same deer it appears to be getting smaller antlers.

So are the pictures three years apart or just two? Dates would indicate two. Also, seeing that the date of the older pictures are the first and second of September, is it possible that he's still at least partially in velvet? I wonder if that could account for the appearance of a loss of mass?

I'm guessing same deer. I think the body in the 2009 photos looks pretty young, and the more recent pics look like a more mature deer. Timing makes a difference, too, though. Obviously the latter pics are of a rutting buck with a huge neck.

Regardless, what an awesome animal! Too bad for the loss of half the rack.

At 7 years old if it is him you would think his rack would be on the decline. I would have loved to see who big he got the past couple years, again if it is him.
