I laughed. It may be harsh, and people are going to complain about the fairness of the punishment, and debate what was overlooked and what wasn't in recent history, but the fact of the matter is life isn't fair. Football isn't any different. A precedent has been set. Will it continue? Most likely. At least now the NFL can show they plan to take action if it comes to light (essentially protecting themselves in the future). All of that aside, who cares? It's baseball season. Bring on the steroid discussions.
They were all legal hits within the rules of the game. Shame on him for not stopping something that has been going on all over the league since it's existance? Players get 1 or 2 game suspensions for manslaughter or attempted battery, but Payton gets a full year for this? I thought it was going to be about 6 games. But a ******* year? Goodell is a joke.
I thought I read somewhere this is not 100% Goodell. It actually was in their CBA that gave the NFL no choice. I will see if I can find it.
Seriously? The NFL formally apologized to the Vikings the day after the game for how poorly it was officiated in the Saints favor One of the Ref's even apologized to Favre for what was the most blatant of the illegal hits on him (all that play did is cause both an injury and a turnover...no big deal huh?) http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...d-for-missing-saints-hit-in-nfc-championship/
Okay found this. It doesn't say what I first thought but I find it interesting. That non-contract bonuses are against the rules. And that's what the bounty program was - a bonus for performance, based on agreements outside of the players' contracts with the team. The fact that the program was laid out in writing (instead of via casual talk around the lockerroom) is more troubling. My understanding is that previous denials of such a program, which were also put in writing, meant that the Saints had lied to the NFL office about it, too. All of those are no-nos.
god...I knew Viking fans would come in here whining. And some guy said that Favre told him that the ref apolgized? Please. But even if he did, those types of plays happen in every freaking game. It happens. It is ridiculous that now everyone is going back, watching Saints games, and are saying "SEE!!?? They obviously had a bounty out of that player! Did you see that extra ummmph on that hit! Freaking thugs!"
Actually, it happened right afterwards... Within a week of the game, the Vikes sent in a tape to the league office of 8ish hits they felt were excessive/illegal and not called... Maybe they should do what the NCAA did to USC for only one players transgressions (not even related to anything happening on the field)?? Take away their trophy/title.... :-)
Yeah, of course, the Vikings sent in a tape to complain. They lost. And yes, of course I'm whining right now. I don't care. I'm pissed.
No dog in this fight. I agree with everything Hooker has said. I was laughing when this first came out and ESPN was airing dozens of Saints hits. Not sure what they were trying to prove other than they were good legal hits. And to think... those were the hits they dug deep to prove their point with lol. It happens all over. Saints got screwed. Ridiculous IMO.
Its not just about Payton being the head coach and this went on. Read about this guy and the NFL is sending a message on who they think should be "friends" with there coaches. http://deadspin.com/5890499/meet-th...he-saints-bounty-program?tag=michael-ornstein
Did Steve Smith have a bounty on him? Even if he didn't this cheap shot always makes me laugh because Harper made the late hit but Jenkins gets owned by Smith. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt-Gvj3eer0&feature=youtube_gdata_player Farve was taking late hits in 09 and a play that should have been called for roughing the passer but wasn't, ended up as an INT. Also, I am a Bucs fan (been a tough few years) and I think the penalty on Payton was too harsh. I'm good with the monetary fine, the loss of picks, and Williams getting to boot, but Payton out an entire season is ridiculous. Maybe 8 games max. I wonder if this will motivate Brees to sign the franchise tender or if this will have an adverse impact on contract negotiations.
Don't blame ya. I think the Saints will be fine though. Brees will pick up the slack on the leadership side of It. He's that good I think.
