A student from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point went missing early Saturday morning. The missing UWSP student's body was pulled from the Wisconsin River this morning, just a few hundred yards from the bar he was last seen at. Being a student here, this story is incredibly sad and surreal. There have now been men that have disappeard and found in rivers at 4 Wisconsin schools: Eau Claire, La Crosse, Oshkosh, and Stevens Point. The facts of the cases just don't add up and i'm really starting to believe this is more than just drunk kids falling in the river. Anyone else have any thoughts about this? http://www.wkow.com/story/17076247/family-of-missing-uw-stevens-point-student-speaks-out
X2....happens all the time. They just fished one out of Lake Michigan this morning. Sure is sad though!
When I first heard about this, the Lacrosse students is the first thing I thought about. Sad I just hope they wake up and realize there is a psycho out there.
I highly doubt it's foul play. Happens around the country. I'd bet money it has happened in Eau Claire too.
Agree. It's drunk kids doing stupid things and happens more than we hear. Yes, it has happened at Eau Claire more than once. It'll most likely happen again.
What also is sad is that it took them this long to find him. First place they should have looked is where they found him. My cousin lives in Point and as soon as he told me what was going on I told him they would find him in the river.
That is sad, prayers for him and his family. Foul play or not, I will not shed my opinion. I don't mean to start any debates either, but something to think about is that college kids are fairly easy targets. Campuses do not allow arms and you can find yourself walking to your car in a dark parking lot often. I am taking a night class. I don't get out until 10. Campus is right outside of downtown, not a bad neighborhood, but not a great one either. Add to it that I have a couple hundred dollars worth of equipment on me as well. There was a student at Purdue that went missing a year or so ago. Last place he was seen was at the bar. Found him in one of the buildings up behind a transformer I believe. Last year a girl went missing at IU. The last time she was seen was about 4 or 5 am, had been at the bars as well (20 years old). I believe foul play was involved in this one. But like said above. Probably a coincidence. No matter what, it's a life lost and that in itself it heart wrenching.
I've had lots of good times on Water Street. As close as it is to the river, I'm surprised we don't hear this story more often.
Why have there never been any girls that have ended up in the river? Girls are the most dumb when they're drunk but somehow its always been guys in the rivers around here? Also, Eric was at the bar with his friends and they all say he was fully functioning and not all that drunk, so how did he end up in the river? He was heading to his gf's house which is the opposite way of the river. As much as I'd like to think this was an accident, I just don't see the evidence going that way.
Best decision I ever made was NOT to transfer there from UMD Raised some hell in Sutherland Hall though
Happens every where. Being smart..... doesn't necessarily mean you're of right mind. http://cornellsun.com/node/29424 http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rob-fishman/the-gorges-of-cornell-uni_b_498656.html
Yes I guess it could go either way but people have been getting drunk in wisconsin for decades and I know for a fact that some of the ways that they have found have been oftely strange habbits for a drunk person to do. ie: perfectly folded clothes sitting on the river wall, and footsteps over a branch that was sticking out of the ice by a foot or two and the steps are just as consistent as if there wasn't even a stick there... Could it be coincidence maybe but it is really hard to believe IMO. footprintsattheriversedge.blogspot.com
The theory I keep hearing is the guys walk over to the river to take a leak and fall in. The water is ice cold, hypothermia sets in and they pass out. Very sad for sure.
This happened to a friend of mine at Michigan State. His name was Ryan Getz. Ryan's disappearance received national attention as there seemed to be a string of similar cases around the country within a few years. While eye witnesses reported him being drink, many of us saw him within an hour of him going missing and he hadn't had a drink. It was New Year's Eve and he volunteered to DD. This was common for him as he rarely drank. He went to pick up his girlfriend from a pre-party and was suppose to join us later. When he didn't show up, we figured they just decided to stay in. They pulled his body from the Red Cedar River (runs through MSU's campus) a few months later. His girlfriend never saw him that night. A couple witnesses said when he went to a apartment to pick her up, some guys gave him a hard time and wouldn't let him in. They eventually went in the hallway with him and closed the door behind them. That was the last time he was seen alive. The two guys were interviewed and shared the same story. Both said he was belligerent drunk and aggressive. Ryan was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. I have never seen him severely intoxicated or violent in the 8 years I knew him. Witnesses' stories changed and/or didn't add up during the investigation. They eventually ruled it an accident. Ryan's family wasn't happy with that outcome, so they hired a private investigator. Like the original poster mentioned, there are eerie similarities from cases around the country. More than a few cases of college males that went missing, reported as very drunk by some witnesses, and stone sober by others. Much of the evidence is the same as well, including certain odd artifacts found near the disappearance sites. Could all just be a coincidence, but there is enough information to make you wonder.
Read about similar cases last year. They were suspecting a serial killer in a couple of those cases, because of the college area and more often than not they were men leaving bars. One case the man was reported missing and his debit card or credit card was being used for gas in another part of the country. Only for his body to turn up weeks later in the river or lake near the bar he was last seen in. If you check the FBI crime statistics at any one time in America there are 35 active serial killers wonder the streets of America everyday seeking Men, Women and Children. About 2 years ago I use to keep my garage door up many of us in the neighborhood did. So as I kept my blind up so my door could see the outdoor wildlife, squirrels and chipmunks. He went into a panic aggressive barking mode that got my attention like what the hell!? I ran down stairs looked out the door about 50 or so yards in the connecting wooded area 8 police officers was stomp kicking a suspect. Come to learn later on that guy had been hiding out in the wooded area for days after raping a 4 year old girl. Since then no one keeps their Garage Door up for extended period of times. And when my dog growls I respond in kind.
This happens occasionally on the Michigan State campus as noted by Vito. Guys get drunk and decide to wade across the Red Cedar River rather than walk all the way down to a bridge. But the river is deeper than it looks and if you're kind of drunk... Girls don't do it because they don't want to get their clothes all sloppy wet looking.
