Thanks Jake!! I'm really looking forward to my first one on june 19th. I'm very tempted to do one sooner, but I think i should probably wait till the 19th. There's alot more 5k's around than i thought!! I'm thinking if the first one goes good, i'll do one in july as well, and i saw a 10k in October that was in my home town where i grew up so there's another realistic goal for me!

Hook, ya i remember the heat/humidity in LA blows!! i was stationed in Ft. Polk for 2 years, we did PT/ran at 4am 9 months out of the year.
Unfortunately due to my work schedule, (work 2am-11am, sleep 7pm-1230pm) all my running has to be mid day...so that guy i always laughed at running in 95 degree heat at noontime will be me i guess!!

Swamp Stalker - It went better then expected. I agree with everything Jake stated. I was disappoint with starting in the middle of the pack, in the end it worked out well for me. Otherwise I would of sprinted the first 3/4 mile then struggled for a bit. I ran with co-workers on a company team. That also helped with motivation wanting to do better then my co-worker. Run at a comfortable pace, is solid advice. Have fun and enjoy it Swamp.

My ability has been compromised since I hurt my knee last year. I would say my knee is only about 80%. I need to set up a doctors appt to figure it out...getting older sucks.

Some folks seem to hate running in the rain, but I always loved it. It's hard to overheat when you're water-cooled.

Some of you seemt to really hate running on a treadmill. Why is that exactly?

    Extremely boring.
Doesn't get me going cardio wise as bad as running outside.
    Destroys my shin splints.

I have a wide range of music that I listen to while running, but I have to have music that has the right beat. I use the PaceDJ app to screen my music library for songs that have a beat that matches or is close to my stride.

A good example of a song that fits my natural pace perfectly is Bad, Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce. It's 147 beats per minute and fits me to a T. Of course, it helps that I like older music.

I understand the first two, but I'm lost on how a treadmill would be worse for shin splints. It seems like the additional cushion would help instead of making it worse.

the only thing treadmills are good for are incline sprints, other than that, I absolutely despise everything about them

    too flat

if you do run a lot on treadmills, you need to run on incline at 1 or 2

Well, given my age and how long it's been since I ran regularly, until I figure out what I'm doing wrong I'm sticking with the "dreadmill". The only time I ran on the road recently was a week ago today and my left knee is still giving me fits. My right knee is starting to act up a little.

I dont know if I can act on the advice I got in my thread about trying to change from a heel strike to a mid-foot strike. I just don't know how difficult the transition will be.

I am going to Fleet Feet tomorrow to check and see if there's something obvious I'm doing wrong.

I did the same as you, I enjoyed scenery and love checking my fields in summer afternoons to see what deer were in the fields and what time. So I started biking. First, it was only around my property, then it was my property and my other family's property...so on and so forth until I was biking 14 miles a day. Well 14 miles sounded good and it covered a lot of the farm land around my area but I wasn't satisfied with "only" biking 14 miles...so what do you do??? You start timing yourself and beating those times every day. You can ALWAYS be faster... Good luck :)

That's almost the exact opposite from me. I can run three miles on a treadmill easily but a mile on the road is killing me. Not the cardio, but the knees.

2.75 miles today!!!! First mile was 8 1/2 minute mile, mile two was alot slower at 9 mins 45 seconds, and the 3/4 mile was in the 9's as well. still felt great though, shin splints are all but gone. I'm going on week 4, I've also drasticaly changed my diet/food intake 3 weeks ago. no more soda at all just water and milk with dinner. no more fatboy food snacks, just fresh cut fruit. my wife is also cooking alot healthier meals for me, and controlling my portions. the first 2 weeks i lost 8 pounds, but somehow now its only showing a 4 pound loss....i dont get it!!!!!! i used to drink 5-6 coke's a day, and eat like a slob! I really thought i would be losing more weight by now. i dont think im gaining alot of muscle from running am i?

I mirror the others that are against it.

    Destroys my feet.
    Very boring.
Catch yourself constantly looking down at the distance which makes it worse.
Unless you want to keep pushing incline/decline, your terrain changes won't be as frequent.
