Nonsense. As long as you take care of your body and run properly you can still run at an old age. Key is taking care of your body which includes proper shoes stretching and right type of soil.
As long as you stay in shape the running won't tear you up , starting a program that's too difficult too quickly can hurt you . I haven't run as much as I need to in the past few months since I left the military and the weight gain is far more uncomfortable to me than running 4-5 times a week ever was. I need to start hitting the pavement again this week before I get too out of shape.
I have ran for a couple of years and never had any issues. This past winter I switched to a treadmill and that about killed me, mentally and physically. Now I'd much rather freeze while running than run on a treadmill.
Great thread, great timing!! Right now as I type, I had gotten done talking to my wife and said, I want to start running again. I haven't ran in about 7-8 years. I need to take it very slow, but this thread is motivating me to get moving!
Not sure what you are rehabbing... How about the swimming pool? Most guys I know that think they are in shape find out differently once they get in the pool.
man.......Just went and ran a mile.....BARELY!!! wow i am so out of shape it's pathetic!! A little background: I'm 37, 5'-7" 220 pounds, gained 40 pounds from quitting smoking almost 3 years ago. used to run a 5 1/2 minute mile in the army 7-8 years ago. today was a wake up call for me, glad I did it! lungs still burning.....lol
Nice job, I'm getting back into the swing of working out again too. I put on a little more than the freshman 15 it's rough starting out but it will slowly get easier. Sent from my iPhone
Running threads are funny to me, espeically on forums like this one. I ran divison 1 track for 4 years and have coached middle school track for the last 5 years. Even more funny about people talking about putting your body through a beating... Try 40 to 60 miles a week for 4 years - plus racing and plus weight training. Thinking some folks going out and running are going to do damage. Keep it simple... You want to be a decent runner at all it starts with a couple basics - rest (got to get decent sleep) and nutrition (gotta hydrate and you gotta cut the BS out of your diet). Honestly, people can give you 5 or 6 day a week training plans but if you don't do those 2 things you will just end up hurt. I wasn't all world or anything in college but I was reliable as I only missed 2 meets in 4 years and that kept me viable. Anyway - do those things and then if you want to take some of the training suggestions on here then you'd probably find a good place to start. But if your serious about it and no offence to anyone who has posted in here but don't seek training advice on BH.com lol plenty of reliable running sites that you can visit for this advice.
Running can be extremely beneficial to your health... but you can also take it too far. I know several runners in their 40s-50s that are absolutely destroying their body by running too much. A fat guy trying to get back into shape will not fall into this category, especially if you work on good form and keep your strides short. My shin splints issue is all but cleared up now that I became OCD about shortening my giraffe like strides. Still can't push it too much and calf compression sleeves help, but I don't have too much problems with it anymore. I'm a complete newb to running, but it is nice that my plan is EXACTLY what Hook recommended. That is reassuring... I run two days a week at 3-4 miles trying to keep the pace up but not pushing it, usually average between 7.5-8 mins/mile. I'll run one day a week at a longer distance 6-8 miles at around 9 mins/mile. I'll also do one hell day as I call it. There is a hill one street over from my house, gains about 300+ feet over 200 yards. It's brutal, I'll sprint up it and jog slowly back down, then repeat over and over until I feel like puking and then walk home. I run in the evenings for my cardio. I hit the weights every morning at 6 am. I try to stagger leg day in between the running days to offset it somewhat.
You'll get the same informed or uninformed people on a running forum. Remember it is a public forum on the Internet.
Nope. Not what I was suggesting at all but if you want to take it personal then go ahead and take it personal. Just that, this is a "hunting" forum no? As with any forum you have to decide what is good information and what isn't. Deciding on good and bad information might be an easier process on a running specific forum as opposed to a hunting forum. In other words, what if this was a running forum and I asked - what do you think I should do this turkey season to increase my odds of harvesting a bird?!?? I might get a couple answers - but I'm not sure that would be the best place for me to find that sort of information. Again if it's your prerogative please take this personal.
not taking it personal just don't understand the logic this might be a hunting forum, but we do have a pretty diverse group of people here at times and can usually get pretty good advice on most topics it's not like all anyone here does is hunt
No doubt, which is exactly what I was just saying in my reply. I've read and commented on many fitness related threads on BH.com and good advice is to be found in this thread and many others. It's besides the point and I shouldn't even have brought it up. By all means, if you want to ask a bunch of people on a hunting forum how to train for a running race then go for it. I am not calling this a bad place or anything of the sort. Please don't make something of this that it is not.
There's a lot if good non-hunting information on this site. Large variety of people, with knowledge on many different things. Great place..
