Has anyone ever shot a deer that was running or walking fast? I saw Tred Barta double lung one in a full run with his long bow. I have been practicing running shots to some degree. Me and a friend were able to rig up a McKenzie deer target on a long sloped rope so it would glide down the rope at anywhere between 2-5mph. I figured it wasn't like a gun where you want to follow through and keep the bow moving while you shot but this seemed to be the best way. Picking a spot and releasing when the deer arrived there was far less consitent. I figured since it was a long arrow coming off the rest instead of a bullet being blasted out of a gun, moving the bow mid shot would throw the arrow way off but I was completely wrong. Can anyone else chime in on this?

I have shot at close walking deer. Too risky for my to attempt longer walking shots. Definitely keep moving thru the shot. I've also played around trying to hit rolling or tossed tennis balls with my longbow.

i've had deer run past me while on stand and i just do the little "meep" grunt sound with my mouth. They usually stop and check where the sound was coming from. I'd never shoot a running deer with my bow. Rifle is a different story.

Yeah I would have to agree with everyone. No way I'd take a running shot. You can almost always grunt and get them to stop. However, if a monster was trotting by me at 10 yards and wouldn't stop, I might consider letting it fly based upon how well I was doing with practice. With a gun I would still rather not take a running shot but I wouldn't hesitate given the right situation. Make that first shot count then start throwing as much lead as you can :moose:

A loud whistle works when they're 100+ yards away. Even when I rifle hunted I didn't take running shots, and only took walking shots if they weren't walking too fast.

I grew up running dogs here in FL and that always meant a running shot at a deer. I have taken plenty of deer that way, but I would never try one with a bow.

At a SLOW walk...yes have shot many deer that way with out a problem

I would not shoot an arrow at a deer that is moving at even a moderate pace though...I would then try to stop them for a shot

FYI...Tred Barta does some wacky stuff...not all good imo

Slow walks and close shots, yes. I pick a spot out and let the the animal come to my arrow rather then me trying to keep up with it.

Good answer. Don't think I would try it but that would be the way to do it. IMO
