Im going to experiment with a rubbing post this year. Going to cut a small tree about 6 ft tall and leave a licking branch on about 4.5 ft high and put it in the open area near my stand off a corn field. Any suggestions when to do this? Will bucks hit rubs before the shed the velvet?
Try to find a cedar. From what I've heard those are the best to make rubbing posts or horizontal posts.
sounds good. I have some pre-orbital gland that ive been itching to use too. does it really matter when I do this or should I wait til later in the summer?
Not really sure. I never have done either of them yet. On Youtube look up White Knuckle web show. Pretty good shows and the guy does a lot of the horizontal rubs. Might be able to get some info off them.

I can't embed on this site for some reason but here. Click on this link.
I'm putting one in this weekend. Have the perfect cedar for it picked out. Also going to get things ready for a rope scrape setup as well.
Going to do a natural fiber rope that's soaked in preorbital scent hanging from an overhead branch. I'll soak it inside a gallon sized ziplock before I hang it and then refresh it once a week when checking cameras.
made a "rub post" 2 years ago from an old cedar fence post, hasn't been hit yet but haven't tried any scents or lures with it. I made a horizontal rub last year that a couple deer were interested in but no takers for a full rub.
There are a couple Midwest Whitetail videos on the rub post idea. I couldn't find the original video (which sucks because it was very informative) but this is the result of this guys work. He says the post got the most activity in Oct/Nov which I guess is to be expected. Midwest Whitetail | Make a Horizontal Rub for Deer - YouTube
Yes it is brilliant, but I don't want to claim credit for it. It's a Don Higgins thing that I read about last year. I'm putting in a second food plot behind my house this year and clearing some really thick nasty buckthorn out in the process. I just don't have any good trees with overhanging branches for a licking branch in the spot I want it. So I'm going to try the rope scrape thing there and see how it works in my neck of the woods. I'll probably use a Tink's product, I don't think the exact type of scent really matters as much as the placement of it does. I'd like to find a way to make a cedar horizontal rubbing post with one of the uprights having the rope hanging off it.
I have a couple cedar trees that I topped a couple years back to clear for a stand, going to limb the rest of it except 1 branch hope it works on live cedar trees.
