I too once used only leather boots (usually Danner), and while they were quality boots they had their cons. a. you needed weeks to break those suckers in b. you still got wet if you were around water c. not cheap. This year, I wanted to try a rubber boot. I could have gotten a pair of Muck Boots almost at cost from a friend who reps them, but instead tried Irish Setter with their new heel system. Let me say- best pair of hunting boots I've purchased yet. They fit awesome (I bought size 15 their largest, while I am a 15/16) and they fit with the largest socks on. I bought them insulated because I hate when my feet get cold, really speeds up the end of the day for me- and these things are TOASTY. I wore regular socks with them the other day and they were warm. I'd probably wear a sock liner in the future for early season hunts. Also- best feature- most comfortable boot ever out of the box. Feels like I've had them 3 years.
i have cheapy black ones from wally world. and love them.... the scent control part is amazing, I wore them all squirrel season (started in june here in MO) and have watched deer walk where I just walked minutes before and they had no clue. now, these were the cheap ones, like $20... but even in 40 degree weather, my feet FREEZE so get something with insulation. mine have none. they're comfortabe, water proof. and scent proof. (and in the summer they helped keep ticks off (for some reason)
I use lacrosse uninsulated, but I hunt in Louisiana. One thing you have to be careful about with muck boots is they can get torn up with briars pretty easy, couple of my have ruined a few pairs. Go with the alphas. Brandon T. www.cajuntiedowns.com
