Tomorrow morning is the last day I'll have to turkey hunt for this season. I'll be hunting a farm I've had no time to scout and therefore don't know where the birds are roosting. The only intel I have to go off is a couple birds we bumped during late morning while walking the property 2 weeks ago. I'll be able to get out to the farm around 7 pm tonight which will allow me a little time to try and see/hear where birds are roosting so I can set up close to them in the morning. So my question is this - what tactics/calls do you guys find works best to get a bird to respond at night, and what time do you generally try and get them to respond back to a call? Are you waiting until they're on the roost or shortly before they fly up? Before dark or just after?
I like to wait till it is fairly dark and I know they are in the tree. Owl hoot first, if no reply yote howl, still no response I try a couple yelps, STILL nothing blow the horn lol. Still no gobbles? Well probably better find a new spot. I usually don't make it passed call #2 though. Good luck JZ
^^Thats about exactly what I do, I always wait till late in the evening when the birds are roosted and use owl call. Never had a problem getting a gobble if there nearby. I have a buddy that uses yote howl and Siren on his fox pro with good results too.
Like tackle box said. But if I dot get a response after the yote howl I'll do it again and use a box call with a rubber band to do a gobble and that usually works. A pheasant call works the best! But I'm guessing a lot of people don't have one of them in the pack! Sent from my arrow using Mathews!
