I'm taking a friend and his son hunting in the morning during the youth season. My honey hole ridge had gobblers firing all over this evening. I know roosted isn't roasted, but I've got a pretty good feeling about this. Hope to get the young guy his first bird in the morning.
Good luck with that! Although you definitely have the odds in your favor that doesn't automatically guarantee a dead bird. You said it yourself. It always seems to come when you least expect it.
Everything went as planned this morning, minus the kill. The gobbler flew down and strutted at about 60 yards. We watched the show for a few minutes, then I hit him with a few soft yelps. Here came the gobbler.....then the boy starts coughing. And coughing. Then coughed some more.....loudly. The bird got skittish and walked away. No shots fired, but we had a great time. We came home early because he was cold, planning a return hunt in the morning....cough silencer in hand. :D
Well you did everything but have to bother with cleaning him...sometimes I do not mind that at all. Congrats on a good morning and also congrats to you for taking a kid.
well at least you got to be out there, which is better than sitting @ home. What started the coughing fits? Hopefully you'll get em next time.
His dad said he was getting over a cough. It was cold and damp yesterday morning, add that to the 1/2 mile walk in and he started hacking. :D Today's hunt got cancelled due to snow. None of us really wanted to sit in the blowing snow. We'll be after the birds again the day before Easter.
