The small packages of rice should have directions. I buy it in ten pound bags. Those of us of the Mongolian persuasion use rice cookers. When I told Mama I was moving in with my husband to be, she went right out and bought me one, a Sanyo.

For white rice, most people use too much water and it comes out starchy.

Here's my method for making rice in a saucepan.

1-1/2 cup boiling water (most people use 2 cups) (I sometimes drop chicken or beef bouillion in it for some added flavor)
Add 1 cup rice to boiling water and stir once. (Pinch of salt, pat of butter optional)
Boil uncovered until the water and the rice are the same level.
Stir once, cover and simmer on lowest heat for 8 minutes.
Remove from heat without removing the cover and wait 20 minutes or until ready to serve. Stir once after you remove the lid.

It should be perfect, though your lowest setting may be a little different than mine.

If it is still a little starchy, simmer a little less next time. If it is a little too crunchy add a minute or 2 next time.

Rice is a grain(says Wikipedia) and corn is a starchy vegetable.

Check again. Corn is a grain. In fact, when the Bible mentions corn, it's referring to wheat. When the translation was done, corn was a generic term for grain.
