    Is it a vegetable?

It is an edible part of a plant right?

Me and my girlfriend are having a debate...

Rice, corn.... grains. Not veggies in my book. Just carbs with little nutritional value.

Maggots are nutritional. In some places (3rd world mostly) they raise chickens on them. They put some chunks of offal in a bucket with holes cut into it and hang it over a chicken pen. Flies do their work and maggots start falling out of the bucket and to the waiting chickens. As long as the meat/guts aren't contaminated with botulism the chickens do quite well.

But EEEEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!!! Not saying that my birds don't occasionally get into some disgusting and maggoty thing but there's no way I'd feed it to them on purpose. Bleagh. Makes you want to go right out and eat some imported chicken or egg products, right?

But I like rice. :) I'm just too fat to eat any anymore. I miss it. It's almost like I'm half-Japanese and ate it everyday as a kid. LOL. Resembling maggots doesn't even help with my longing for it.

A potato is considered a vegetable. How does it compare nutritionally to rice?

Rice is a grain. I am a traditional Japanese wife so I do most of the cooking. Rice and noodles are a staple part of our diet. But we also eat a LOT of vegetables and fruit and some meat, chicken, pork, fish.

Potatoes, I think, are more nutritious than rice. Brown rice is supposed to be better for you than white rice, but I cook traditional, so I alway use Calrose rice.

But fresh clover is very tasty too

Soon as I read rice, Chipotle instantly jumped to the forefront of my brains activity.

Rice and Potatoes are grains to me.

Corn is a vegetable, although equivalent to them in the fact that it is essentially empty carbs.

Not really, empty starches I guess. Equivalent to the grains as far as nutrition goes is what I was getting at.

I don't consider eating potatoes as eating your vegetables growing up, but corn always counted for whatever reason. Potatoes are like the ugly red headed stepchild that no food group really wants to claim.

Love me some rice no matter what it looks like. Just don't overcook it or scorch it. I am with DLG, its a staple at our house too.

Whats the best way to cook Rice ? I prefer dirty rice not the white. I love mixing Brown rice with baked chicked breat but really suck at cooking it. I usually get a tub from Grandys to use. My rice turns out bad, give me some pointers please!

I have Japanese rice cookers. Put in rice, put in water... push button... bam... gohan!

But right now I use them to cook rice for the chickens.

Rice cookers are the absolute best. Gotta mess around with the portions and water for brown rice but its totally worth it.
