I've just been shooting my recurve. I had a new string put on my compound and a dozen arrows cut, just need to dial it in and see which of these arrows are shooting true.
Just sent Bcowg another message requesting that they check in by the end of the week or we would request an alternate.
I top seeded a couple of existing clover plots yesterday with a clover/rape/turnip blend of seed. Want to give them a little variety this Fall. Ran a few cameras that I was going to be close to anyway. Got plenty more pics of my number 1 but no other shooters. I’m not really surprised. I think it will have to cool off and have beans start turning and acorns falling before I’ll pick up some of the others regularly. The humidity this weekend was unbearable. I can’t wait for Fall.
For those of you who hunt around ag, what kind of differences do you see on corn years vs soybean years? This is my third year hunting this “farm”, and the first two were 100% soybeans.
We always left a little unharvested towards the back of our place in Missouri. Corn they tear up a little earlier and it was almost like they were just trying to beat the coons to it. Soybeans were always good for late season hunts after everything else was gone. They would come into it around sundown and munch on pods.
In KY beans aren’t usually much good to us after they start to turn yellow in September. Most of the time our beans get harvested in late Oct or early Nov so they aren’t usually around to hunt over with any truly cold weather. It can be good to hunt the picked bean field right after it gets cut but in my experience it doesn’t last long and is nowhere near the draw that a freshly cut corn field is. Beans that are still nice and green during early September can obviously be great to hunt on but of course our early Sept weather is usually hot as blue blazes so it’s hard to get too excited about. Corn draws the deer from late Summer through at least a month or more after it gets cut. If the farmers combine leaves a good bit it can keep pulling them in through the Fall. Nowadays a lot of our corn gets cut between 8/25-9/15 so sometimes there isn’t enough left on the ground to last even till late October. I prefer corn because I know that I will at least get some cool days to hunt a cut corn field edge at some point. In a given year there might not be a single day of decent cool weather in KY when soybeans are still green and attractive to deer.
At the 205 acres right by my house we are almost all corn this year too. We hold more deer when we have corn. But sometimes they get feeling too safe in it and don’t want to come out of it. One things for sure though, they need to get a drink of water eventually
Same here just east of St. Louis in Illinois. We are on the edge of the jet streams and it’s a toss up every year whether we will get a good cool snap in time.
That’s kinda what I’m worrying about. I didn’t really have much luck on the freshly cut soybean fields last year. I primarily stick with travel routes and hunting between parallel trails and bedding areas. But hopefully the corn comes out early and it won’t be an issue.
Soybeans are useless with a October 1st opener if they all get cut. If any are left standing it’s a late season gold mine. We thought we had won the lotto last year when about 2 acres of beans were too wet for the farmer to cut. Nope. Soon as the ground froze good and we were about to hunt over them he got in there and cut them. I much prefer corn over beans
Pulled the camera at my house so I got better pics off the SD card of the old turd bully buck. Crazy. I personally have never seen a giant drop tine coming off the top of a brow tine... until now. What the hell?!
Personally, I like those kinds bucks. Unique. The buck I got last year had what my friend called a "trash rack". He scored 141 and after deductions he barely squeaked out 126 but he was an old bully buck and a real challenge to put an arrow in.
Yea there’s no doubt that he’s a great deer that anyone should be happy to shoot with a bow because of age alone. Thing is I have a friend who has been obsessed with this deer for the last two years. He’s already got plans to come and try to hunt him in mid Sept. I’d be happy with this deer myself but I don’t have the heart to go over there and kill him when my friend wants him so bad. If he doesn’t get him killed in Sept I will probably put in a few sits and he better not walk out on me. It is in my back yard for goodness sakes.
I like this type of deer also. It would be cool to put an arrow thru him. In PA, our soybeans don't usually get picked until late Oct/ Nov so they are good until they turn yellow. After they get picked and it gets cold, every deer in the county will be in the fields picking beans off the ground, mind you it's usually super cold and snowy by then. We have a big field on a lease in NY that is in the migration route ( very deep snow years) where deer come off the hills and down into the lowland near the lake. If this happens, 100 deer in the field can easily happen. Problem is that NY season is short (Dec 18) so we don't always get enough snow to affect them. If you have a late season over soybeans, it's good here. I hunt in areas where we have more woods than ag, so the ag fields tend to be prime. +2 (img) We have to wait until the 27th, I believe. It does not appear as if Bcowg is going to check in.
I hope Bcowg shows up but I guess it ain’t looking good. So is the final goal for every team to have the same number of people I guess? If a team winds up with an extra person does that Team’s score just get calculated down based upon the extra member?
